About this picture

Oberderdingen (until 1964 and still today mostly just called Derdingen) is a municipality in the Kraichgau , in the northeast of the Karlsruhe district .

geography

Geographical location

Oberderdingen is located on the border between Stromberg and Kraichgau, with a substantial part of the district belonging to the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park . The municipality extends between 154 and 337 meters above sea level. Bretten , Knittlingen and Eppingen are the closest towns. The community is located about 35 km northeast of Karlsruhe and 40 km west of Heilbronn .

Neighboring communities

The following cities and municipalities border the municipality of Oberderdingen, starting in the southeast in a clockwise direction: Sternenfels , Knittlingen (both Enzkreis ) and Bretten ( Bauerbach district ), Kraichtal ( Gochsheim district ), Zaisenhausen and Kürnbach (all Karlsruhe districts).

Community structure

The municipal area consists of the core town of Oberderdingen (with the integrated former village of Unterderdingen), the municipality of Flehingen , which was incorporated in 1973 (with Sickingen , which was incorporated on April 1, 1936, and which was now completely dissolved) and the village of Großvillars , which until 1972 also belonged in part to the neighboring town of Knittlingen. Flehingen and Großvillars are also localities in the sense of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code, that is, they each have a local council with a local mayor as chairman.

Furthermore, a distinction is sometimes made between residential areas or residential areas with their own name, such as the Luisenhof in Flehingen and the areas Obere Mühle, Ölmühle, Untere Mühle and Wilfenberg in Oberderdingen.

In the Middle Ages the deserted places Bernhardsweiler and Goldshausen still existed .

history

Oberderdingen

London 1684

Derdingen was first mentioned in 766 in the Lorsch Codex , since 1247 a distinction has been made between Oberderdingen and Unterderdingen. Both places initially belonged to different dominions before they came to the Herrenalb monastery in 1247 . The tower castle of the local lords became the Amthof of the Herrenalb monastery. The Württemberg led 1556 as patrons of the monastery Herrenalb Reformation one. Until 1807 there was a maintenance office of the Herrenalb monastery. When the new administrative structure was implemented in the Kingdom of Württemberg , which was founded in 1806 , both places were assigned to the Maulbronn Oberamt . In 1835 the community name was renamed "Derdingen (Upper)". After the dissolution of the municipality of Großvillars, which was only separated from Kleinvillars in 1826, in 1866 1/6 of the village came to Oberderdingen, the other part to the city of Knittlingen . In 1936 the parish name was simplified to “Derdingen” with the following brackets. When the Oberamt Maulbronn was dissolved in the course of the administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Oberderdingen (with Unterderdingen and the part of Großvillars belonging to it) became part of the Vaihingen district in 1938 . Towards the end of the Second World War, a satellite camp of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp was set up in Derdingen .

In 1945 Derdingen became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

On June 2, 1964, the community was renamed Oberderdingen again. The former Unterderdingen had now completely merged into Oberderdingen, but was still run as a separate living space until 1971.

During the district reform in Baden-Württemberg , Oberderdingen came from the Vaihingen district to the Karlsruhe district on January 1, 1973 , while the neighboring municipality of Knittlingen became part of the newly formed Enzkreis . In order not to divide the place Großvillars into two different districts, its part belonging to Knittlingen was incorporated into the municipality of Oberderdingen. At the same time, the municipality of Flehingen was incorporated into the municipality of Oberderdingen. This combined the two former Württemberg towns of Oberderdingen and Großvillars with the former Baden community of Flehingen to form a new community.

Districts

Supplication

Flehingen was first mentioned in 778/79 as a Flancheim. The Lorsch monastery had large estates in the area. The Lords of Strahlberg and, from 1368, the Electoral Palatinate gave the place a fiefdom to a local nobility, whose heirs in 1638 were Wolff-Metternich . In 1805 Flehingen came to Baden and in 1810 was assigned to the Bretten district office. When it was dissolved in 1936, Flehingen came to the district office (from 1938 district) Karlsruhe.

Sickingen , which was incorporated in 1936, was first mentioned as Sicchenheim in 784 and was also given as a fief by the Electoral Palatinate to the local noble family of the Lords of Sickingen , whose most famous offspring was Franz von Sickingen , and which expired in 1831. In Sickingen there were once two castles, the Upper and Lower Castle . Like Flehingen, the community belonged to the Bretten district office.

Large villas

Großvillars founded expelled Waldensians in 1699 . The name is derived from the Piedmontese " Villar Perosa ". At first the place formed a municipality with the neighboring Kleinvillars , which was separated in 1826. In 1866 the small area was divided between the neighboring communities of Oberderdingen and Knittlingen . This situation remained until 1973, when the place was completely assigned to the municipality of Oberderdingen.

Religions

The Laurentius Church in Oberderdingen in the Amthof has been attested since 1227. As a result of belonging to Württemberg , the Reformation was introduced in the community from 1556 . Therefore, Oberderdingen was a purely Protestant community for a long time. In Unterderdingen the church of St. Peter and Paul was renovated in 1769 , which has a Romanesque - Gothic choir tower. It is assumed that the previous building was the old parish church of Oberderdingen. The Protestant church is today, together with the parish Großvillars the church district Mühlacker the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Württemberg on. The latter was initially a Waldensian community from its foundation in 1699 . In the 19th century it was integrated into the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

After the Second World War , Catholics also moved to Oberderdingen. In 1963 they received their own church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and St. Laurentius. In 1968 the community was raised to a parish . The community belongs to the Mühlacker deanery of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese .

Lutheran services were held in Flehingen from 1522. Nevertheless, there were still Catholics later, so that the church was used simultaneously from 1698. Today's church was built in 1825 and since the new construction of the Catholic Church of St. Martin in 1910 has served only the Protestant parish , which belongs to the parish of Bretten of the Evangelical Church in Baden . The Catholic parish belongs to the Bruchsal deanery of the Archdiocese of Freiburg , as does the neighboring Catholic parish of Sickingen. These two form a pastoral care unit with three other communities in the neighborhood (in Kürnbach, Sulzfeld and Zaisenhausen).

At the site, 1548 Jews were first named, the Flehingen Jewish community existed until 1938/40. The highest number of Jewish residents was reached around 1832 with 167 people (14% of the total population). The community inaugurated a synagogue in 1874 , which was completely destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938. The most important Jewish personality from Flehingen was Jakob Barth , one of the most famous orientalists of his time. The Jewish cemetery on Gochsheimer Strasse, laid out in 1688, is a reminder of the history of the Jews in the village to this day.

The high proportion of industry in the local economy is also reflected in the high number of Turkish immigrants who came to the town as guest workers . That is why there is a very active Turkish- Islamic community in town. Already at the end of the 1970s there were the first initiatives to build a mosque , which was built in the early 1990s after a number of makeshift arrangements. The community with around 150 members is a registered association that belongs to the DITIB umbrella organization in Cologne and is very active in the local association.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Oberderdingen shows, in a shield split by black and silver, a vines lying to the right with three leaves and two grapes in confused colors. In front five (2: 1: 2) silver balls, behind a blue rust. The municipality flag is white and black. The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the municipality on June 7, 1982 by the Karlsruhe district office.

The coat of arms is a combination of the coat of arms symbols of the earlier municipalities. Oberderdingen had the rust, the attribute of St. Laurentius , who was martyred as the former patron saint of the church, in its coat of arms. The balls were taken from the Flehinger coat of arms and are the symbols of the former local lords . The grapes symbolize the long tradition of viticulture in Oberderdingen, which is still practiced in all parts of the village today.
