The adult education center in the Karlsruhe district is a public institution for continuing education.

The adult education center (vhs) offers adult education and extracurricular youth education. It is organized as a non-profit association, to which, in addition to the city of Bad Herrenalb (district of Calw), the following municipalities from the district of Karlsruhe belong: Dettenheim , Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen , Graben-Neudorf , Kürnbach , Linkenheim-Hochstetten , Malsch , Marxzell , Oberderdingen , Pfinztal , Rheinstetten , Stutensee , Sulzfeld , Walzbachtal , Weingarten and Zaisenhausen .

The vhs was founded in the district of Karlsruhe in 1953 (at that time still under the name "Volksbildungswerk für die Landkreis Karlsruhe").

The vhs conducts over 1,300 courses and events every year with more than 21,000 teaching units and almost 13,000 registrations. The central vhs office in Karlsruhe with five full-time employees coordinates and supports 16 established vhs branch offices in the member municipalities. The heads of the vhs branch offices mostly work part-time on a voluntary basis. The teaching staff in the course and event area is made up of around 300 freelance, fee-based lecturers.

In two semesters per year (spring / summer and autumn / winter) the vhs in the district of Karlsruhe offers courses and events in the program areas "Politics / Society / Environment ", "Culture / Design", "Health Education", "Nutrition / Cooking", "Vhs language school" and "professional training" . The “(Central) Forum” includes a. also lectures, excursions and study trips / trips as well as offers in the area of “young vhs” especially for children and young people.
