Key figures

Development of the passenger numbers of the Karlsruhe Transport Association between 1995 and 2019

The KVV brings together 21 transport companies that serve 264 routes. The KVV opens up an area of 3,550 km² for over 1.3 million inhabitants in the catchment area. The length of the rail network is 933.2 km, of which the railway accounts for 354.3 km, the tram 75.3 and the light rail 503.6 km. The bus routes cover a network of around 2,300 km in length. In 2019, the KVV covered 48 million km and served around 1,900 stops.

In the first full calendar year of 1995 since it was founded, 102 million passengers used the network. As a result, KVV was initially able to steadily increase the number of passengers and in 2012 reached the highest number of passengers to date of 178 million. Then a decline set in and the numbers shrank to 166 million passengers by 2018, to increase in 2019 slightly increased again to 166.7 million passengers. Fare income in 2019 amounted to EUR 151.4 million.

organization

The KVV's supervisory board consists of 28 members. The federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate each send a representative to the supervisory board, but are not shareholders. Because only local authorities are shareholders, the KVV is a municipal association.

The KVV tariff area goes beyond the area of the above regional authorities. A forerunner of the KVV was the tariff association between the Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK) and the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) in Karlsruhe. The Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund is responsible for traffic planning, the association tariff, marketing and the distribution of fare income. The municipalities or the state are responsible for ordering the transport services.

KVV is also a participant in the KONUS program . KONUS stands for free use of local public transport for overnight Black Forest vacationers. With the Konus guest card, holidaymakers in the Black Forest can travel to their destination, the starting point for the hike or ski tour, etc. free of charge. This guest card is financed through a flat fee of 30 cents per night.

From August 2, 2006 to December 31, 2013, Walter Casazza was the managing director of KVV, who previously worked as operations manager for the Innsbruck transport company . His predecessor was Dieter Ludwig . After Ludwig had already handed over the management activities at VBK and AVG to Walter Casazza on February 1, 2006, Casazza was appointed as his successor as managing director of the KVV on August 2, 2006. In this activity, Dieter Ludwig made a name for himself far beyond the city limits as the “local transport pope”.

The KVV became widely known through the Karlsruhe model .

Tariff structure

Until 2012, the KVV offered 24-hour tickets. These have been replaced by the less expensive day tickets. The "old" 24-hour cards from 2012 were given a use-by period until June 30, 2013.

Senior season tickets (from 60/63) and the so-called scool card for schoolchildren are given at a significantly reduced price. They can be used throughout the network, but this season ticket can only be purchased for a whole year instead of monthly.

In addition to monthly and annual tickets, the KVV also offers a company ticket. Up until 2013, companies were able to purchase transferable annual environmental cards at a reduced price, since 2014 the company cards are no longer transferable, but the minimum number required has been reduced.

There is also a semester ticket that can be purchased from many participating universities in Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden and Landau.

In addition to the two KVV-owned smartphone applications, Ticket2Go could be used for KVV from April 2017 until the service was discontinued in December 2019. In June 2017, the airline tariff “eTarif”, which can only be used via this route, was introduced for journeys within Wabe 100 (Karlsruhe city area) . Its price is made up of a basic price per trip (2017: € 1) and a price per commenced kilometer as the crow flies between getting on and off (2017: € 0.25). This tariff can only be used by passengers of legal age, first-class surcharge (+50%) and Bahn-Card discount (−25%) are available.

Transitional tariffs

For cross-regional journeys to the VRN in the transition area that extends to Maikammer-Kirrweiler, Rinnthal and Bad Bergzabern, normal KVV tickets are valid, whereby only the VRN tariff is applicable for journeys from the transition area from the VRN (district of Germersheim). For trips to and from the Ortenau tariff association , residents of the border areas are offered monthly tickets that are valid in these areas and the other transport association. The TGO points card is also valid for cross-border journeys to and from these areas. Combined use of season tickets is explicitly permitted despite the lack of overlap in validity; none of the tariffs can be used for single trips. KVV tickets for cross-border journeys are recognized on the railway lines and individual bus route sections in the VPE. KVV tickets are also valid on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays on bus line 134 between Elsenz and Eppingen.

With the RegioX day ticket, there is also a ticket that is also valid in the Freudenstadt and Calw transport associations and on the bus routes in the VPE . It is also valid on the buses to Dahn, Hauenstein and Wissembourg, on the regional trains to Bundenthal-Rumbach, Neustadt, Speyer, Hochdorf, Schenkenzell and Eyach, as well as the trams to Eutingen, Öhringen, Achern and Bietigheim.

Residents of the KVV area receive a 50 percent discount on some VRN annual tickets when combined with some KVV annual tickets.

For some routes, transitional single tickets (price levels Ü1 to Ü3) are offered for outbreaking journeys for which no continuous ticket is available, which can be purchased in addition to the ticket up to the tariff limit. There is no corresponding offer for the opposite direction. These are available for trips to Speyer, Neustadt, Hinterweidenthal, Dahn and Bundenthal-Rumbach, Darstein and Ludwigswinkel, as well as to all terminus of the AVG light rail.

Others

As KVV.MyShuttle , the transport association in Dettenheim and Graben-Neudorf on the one hand and in Ettlingen ( Ettlingenweier and Spessart ) on the other hand offers a mobility offer in on-demand traffic . There are Mercedes-Benz Vito minibuses driving . A registration by means of a app of the make Ioki is necessary.
