Frank Mentrup (2011)

Frank Mentrup (* 24. October 1964 in Mannheim ) is a German politician of the SPD . Since March 1, 2013 he has been Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1984 at the Moll-Gymnasium in Mannheim, Frank Mentrup completed an apprenticeship as a paramedic while doing community service with the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund . From 1985 to 1992 he studied medicine in Heidelberg and Mannheim .

From 1993 to 2006 he worked at the Mannheim Central Institute for Mental Health in child and adolescent psychiatry as well as in community psychiatry. As a doctor he advised and supervised the social and professional integration offers of the International Federation (IB) , and the professional training center of the DGB (bfw) and the Elisabeth-Lutz-Haus for RPK places.

From 2006 to 2011 he was an assistant doctor in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Karlsruhe Municipal Clinic .

Frank Mentrup has been married to contemporary historian Andrea Hoffend since 1990 and has two sons and two daughters.

Mannheim local politician

In 1983 Mentrup joined the SPD and in 1990 took over the district chairmanship of the Mannheim Jusos .

From 1989 to 1994 he was a member of the Mannheim-Lindenhof district advisory board . From 1994 to 2007 he was a member of the Mannheim municipal council for the SPD . There Mentrup was its chairman from 2001 to 2006. In this function he was, among other things, a supervisory and administrative board member at MVV Energie AG , Universitätsklinikum GmbH (today UMM) , GBG housing company and Stadtmarketing GmbH.

In June 2006 he was defeated in the party-internal selection of the candidate for the Mannheim mayoral election in 2007 against Peter Kurz .

Baden-Württemberg state politician

Mannheim member of the state parliament

The then 41-year-old Mentrup ran in March 2006 in constituency 35 (Mannheim-Nord) for the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg and was elected with 40% of the vote. At the time, he was the only SPD candidate in Baden-Württemberg to receive a direct mandate . In the SPD parliamentary group, Mentrup took over the chairmanship of the school, youth and sport working group and the role of spokesman for education policy.

Member of the State Parliament in Ettlingen

In the state elections in March 2011 , he no longer ran in the Mannheim-Nord constituency , but in the Ettlingen constituency . He won the second mandate with 25.1% behind the CDU candidate Werner Raab , who received 41% of the vote .

Parliamentary State Secretary

After the election - in mid-May 2011 - he became Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport with the areas of responsibility for early childhood education and private schools, initially under Minister Gabriele Warminski-Leitheußer and then under her successor Andreas Stoch .

On March 1, 2013, he resigned the post of State Secretary and on March 15, 2013, his mandate in the state parliament. Marion von Wartenberg took over his state secretary position and Anneke Graner took over his state parliament mandate .

Karlsruhe Lord Mayor

In 2012, Mentrup applied to succeed Heinz Fenrich as Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe. He was supported by the SPD, Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , the Karlsruhe List (KAL) and the Pirate Party . On December 2nd, Frank Mentrup was elected the new mayor with 55.26% in the first ballot. By asserting himself against the CDU candidate Ingo Wellenreuther , who received 35.41% of the vote, Mentrup ended the era of CDU mayors in Karlsruhe, which had been going on since 1970.

On March 1, 2013, at the age of 49, Mentrup took office.
