The Mannheim football club 1908 Lindenhof , usually referred to as MFC 08 Lindenhof for short , is a sports club from the Mannheim district of Lindenhof . The "08ers" played in the top divisions in the 1920s and 1930s, but after the Second World War they hardly appeared nationwide. The club, which has around 683 members (as of January 1, 2014) - including 348 young people up to the age of 18 - has been playing tennis in addition to soccer since the early 1980s, and has had a women's soccer team since 2001.

history

The 1908 Lindenhof football club was founded on March 21, 1908. The following year he was accepted into the Association of South German Football Associations . The Lindenhöfer initially had a hard time asserting themselves against the established local competition. Mannheim was one of the early football strongholds in southern Germany, at which time there had been organized games for ten years. In 1913 the company was promoted to the then third-class B-Class, and the following year the First World War temporarily interrupted gaming operations.

After the war, the "08er" reached the top division for the first time and immediately won the relay championship there in 1921/22. Due to a league reform, however, one had to be content with the second tier for a few years before the MFC 08 was able to establish itself from the 1927/28 season in the top division now called the District League. Due to the league structure at the time, the opponents there came almost without exception from the cities of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen. The Lindenhöfer did not get beyond a midfield place. When the Gauligen were introduced as the new top division in 1933, SV Waldhof, VfL Neckarau and VfR Mannheim qualified for the new Gauliga Baden due to the placements in the last district league season 1932/33 from Mannheim . The Lindenhöfer were again downgraded to the second division. In the following year the championship in the district class Unterbaden West and through playoffs against FV 09 Weinheim succeeded in promotion. In the Gauliga season 1934/35 , however, the 08ers had no chance and were relegated from bottom of the table.

In the post-war years, the focus was initially on restoring the sports field strewn with bomb craters. In 1950/51 the team was promoted to the 2nd amateur league, for a higher league than the fourth division it was no longer enough since the end of the Second World War. After having slipped into the regional leagues for a long time, the footballers reported back to the Rhein-Neckar regional league from 1999 to 2002 and thus back to the supraregional level.

Since the establishment of a tennis department and the construction of tennis courts from 1982, the MFC 08 has offered two sports. In 2001, a women's team was first established in the football department.

Venue

Sports area on the promenade

In the first years of its existence, the MFC 08 used a place called “Lanz'sche Wiese” on today's Windeckstraße behind the current location of the John Deere company . In 1910 a site was leased for the first time at the current location, the “Schäferwiese”, but had to leave it after the First World War. In 1920 the association was assigned a site at the former Lindenhöfer gasworks, which was expanded in 1925 to a capacity of 5000 spectators. Finally, around 1935, the company moved again to the “Schäferwiese” on Promenadenweg. The site is located in the immediate vicinity of the Mannheim Forest Park and, in addition to the clubhouse, includes two soccer fields, including an artificial turf field since 2009, and several tennis courts.

youth

The youth department has around 350 members between the ages of 4 and 18 who, divided into 21 teams, actively participate in the game. For the 2013/2014 season, MFC 08 Lindenhof was awarded the “KLEEblatt” of the Baden Football Association in gold for excellent youth work for the fifth time in a row. The golden leaf clover stands for: K Indian and youth-friendly, L eistungsförderung, E hrenamtlichkeit, E ngagement leisure u. Popular sport.
