Heinz Fenrich (* 9. February 1945 in Unteröwisheim today Kraichtal ) is a German politician of the CDU and from 1998 to February 28, 2013 Mayor of the city of Karlsruhe .

education and profession

Heinz Fenrich completed his training as a financial economist and has been working in the financial sector for the state of Baden-Württemberg since 1967. From 1970 to 1973 he was active in the state parliament, but then switched to the service of a bank in 1974.

Political activity

For the CDU he was chairman of the local association Karlsruhe-Weststadt since 1977. In 1980 he was elected to the municipal council of Karlsruhe and has been one of several mayors of the city since 1991, responsible for schools and local public transport, among other things.

In 1998 Heinz Fenrich ran for the mayoral election. In the first ballot on July 5, he achieved first place with 40,534 votes (39.8%) and was able to prevail in the runoff election on July 19 with around 46%. In 2006 he was re-elected with 55.5% in the first ballot. Because he had reached the age limit of 68 years, his second term of office ended on February 28, 2013, when he was retired he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Karlsruhe. His successor Frank Mentrup was introduced at the municipal council meeting on March 1, 2013.

Other offices, honors and awards

Heinz Fenrich is also chairman of the Karlsruhe Technology Region Association , member of the Presidium of the German Association of Cities and a member of the board of the Association of Cities in Baden-Württemberg. In 2005 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit .

In 2003 he received the democracy pickle from the association Mehr Demokratie in view of a referendum in September 2002, in which two decisions were linked.

In May 2013 he received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Family and private

Heinz Fenrich has been married to Gabriele Fenrich since 1970 and has one daughter.
