Gerhard Seiler

Gerhard Seiler (born October 21, 1930 in Karlsruhe ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He was Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe from 1986 to 1998 and is an honorary citizen of the city. Seiler is a professor of economics and finance .

Life

Professional background

Seiler received his doctorate in 1958 at the Mannheim Business School (today University of Mannheim ) with assumptions and statements of an econometric business cycle model , his habilitation thesis (Karlsruhe 1972) is titled: Optimization Problems of Municipal Investment Planning . After teaching at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Karlsruhe , he was awarded the title of professor in 1972 and an honorary doctorate from the university in 2005 .

Seiler was employed in his hometown since 1959 as port director, city treasurer, from 1977 to 1983 as mayor and from 1983 to 1986 as first mayor. In 1986 he was elected Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe for the first time and in 1994 for the second time. On leaving his post as Lord Mayor in 1998, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and honorary citizenship of Karlsruhe. His party colleague Heinz Fenrich was elected as the new mayor . Since 2005, Seiler has also been an honorary citizen of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) .

From 1980 to 1984 Seiler was a member of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament . In 1995 he was elected President of the German Association of Cities for two years .

The KSC -President Detlef Dietrich explained his resignation in an extraordinary general meeting on February 22 of 2002. The KSC was facing bankruptcy. On February 27, Gerhard Seiler declared himself ready to take over the leadership as emergency president and saved the KSC from financial failure through his political and economic contacts. On November 27th, Hubert Raase was elected by 293 to 25 votes to succeed President Gerhard Seiler, who resigned for health reasons.
