Margret Mergen (born August 26, 1961 in Billerbeck ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and has been Lord Mayor of Baden-Baden since June 10, 2014 .

education and profession

After graduating from high school in Münster in 1980 , she studied geography at the University of Münster and completed her studies in 1986 with a degree in geography . In 1987 Margret Mergen went to Karlsruhe city administration as a trainee and attended the Baden-Württemberg Management Academy in 1988/89 . From 1990 to 1993 Margret Mergen worked in the finance department of the city of Karlsruhe and was responsible for special tasks, including military conversions. Between 1993 and 2000 she was city ​​treasurer in Karlsruhe.

Margret Mergen is Catholic and has been married to Wolfgang Pöter since 1997. In a motorcycle accident through no fault of his own in the summer of 2019, Mergen broke his toe and suffered bruises, while her husband's right leg had to be amputated.

Political activity

In 1999, she sought a political office for the first time in the mayoral election in Rastatt and was narrowly defeated by the incumbent Klaus-Eckhard Walker . From 2000 she was head of the economic and finance department and first mayor in Heilbronn until she was sworn in as mayor of Karlsruhe on February 23, 2007. After Harald Denecken's retirement due to old age, Margret Mergen was elected First Mayor of Karlsruhe for an eight-year term by the local council on June 23, 2009 .

As First Mayor, Margret Mergen was the permanent representative of the Lord Mayor (until February 2013 Heinz Fenrich , then Frank Mentrup ). Her area of ​​responsibility included the city's economy and finances. Specifically, these were building management (until October 1, 2008), finances and participations, congresses and trade fairs, real estate and space management, city marketing, public utilities, transport companies and ports (since June 2008) and business and economic development.

In 2012 Mergen applied for the position of the CDU candidate for the election of the successor to the mayor of Karlsruhe, Heinz Fenrich, but was defeated by Ingo Wellenreuther .

In 2014 she ran for the mayoral election in Baden-Baden and won with 62.6% of the votes in the first ballot. On June 10, 2014, she took up the post of Lord Mayor.

Margret Mergen is a member of the state board of the CDU Baden-Württemberg , deputy state chairwoman of the CDU's local political association , member of the federal board of the local political association and a member of the CDU's SME association.
