The Albtal traffic-Gesellschaft mbH (AVG) is a transport company , the rail and bus transport operates. It is wholly owned by the city of Karlsruhe and operates the light rail and part of the bus transport in the Karlsruhe region and beyond, as well as freight transport by rail. It also maintains part of the railway lines it uses .

The AVG is a member of the tariff association of federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE).

Corporate development

The AVG was as the operating company for the 1957 Albtalbahn that Busenbach-Ittersbach railway and the Ettlinger side panel established. It has been operating these three railway lines since 1957, with the Albtalbahn being converted from narrow to standard gauge between 1957 and 1966 and linked to the Karlsruhe tram network. Since 1975, the AVG has been able to expand its activities by building new railway lines, using existing Deutsche Bahn railway lines and taking over existing railway lines, and has built a light rail system in the Karlsruhe region . In this context, AVG also provides tram services in Karlsruhe and Heilbronn. Due to the continuous expansion of the route network and the consolidation of the timetables, the number of passengers also increased: from around 6 million passengers in 1960 to 8.1 million (1985), 19 million (1990), 32.8 million (1996), 70 million (2009) to 74.9 million in 2016.

From the beginning there was a close cooperation with the Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK), which is expressed in a common administration, the use of common workshops and a common vehicle pool. Since the 1980s, the following division of labor has emerged between the two transport companies: while the VBK is responsible for operating the inner-city tram and bus connections in Karlsruhe, the AVG as a railway company operates regional rail transport. In the course of the expansion of the route network, there was also cooperation with Deutsche Bahn and the Heilbronn municipal utility .

In order to make the route expansion and operation of the light rail connections as smooth as possible, the AVG is trying to take over the routes it operates or to lease them from Deutsche Bahn in the long term. In 1986 she was able to take over the management of the Hardtbahn from the Deutsche Bundesbahn and acquire the line in 2001. In 1994 she acquired the Katzbachbahn and Kraichtalbahn from SWEG . It was able to lease the Kraichgaubahn long-term in 1996, the Enztalbahn and the Murgtalbahn in 2000. AVG also took over the three non-electrified branch lines Maulbronn Stadt – Maulbronn West (1999), Wintersdorf (Baden) –Rastatt and Hinterweidenthal – Bundenthal-Rumbach ( 2007). As a railway infrastructure company, AVG operates its own and leased lines with a length of 284.6 kilometers. On behalf of the district of Calw , the AVG is to take over the operation of the Hermann-Hesse-Bahn Calw-Weil der Stadt .

Like other companies in this industry, AVG is also struggling with the difficulty of attracting train drivers . The staff shortage has existed since 2009 and could not be resolved until 2018 despite constant new hires and support from temporary workers .

According to the company, there has been a balanced number of drivers again since June 2019.

In March 2019, AVG signed an agreement between several transport companies, which provides for the development of a new TramTrain vehicle. The " VDV TramTrain" project is supported by a total of five companies. Partners include the Saarbahn GmbH and the Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen on behalf of the Regiobahn Chemnitz . The first newly developed vehicles should be in use from 2025.

Karlsruhe model

AVG route network in 2011

The AVG has become known above all through the model introduction of a two-system city railway as the first company in Germany (" Karlsruhe model "). The trains run as S-Bahn or regional trains from distant places to Karlsruhe, where they cross the city center as a tram , and then serve the surrounding area again as an S-Bahn or regional train. For the first time, the system was changed from a railway to a tram in the same vehicle, which had to be equipped for both systems. This saves passengers having to switch between trains and trams.

In 1992 a tram line from the city of Karlsruhe was extended to the surrounding area to Bretten using the existing railway infrastructure . The light rail vehicles of the type GT8-100C / 2S , GT8-100D / 2S-M and ET 2010 run on two power systems: in the Karlsruhe tram network with 750 volts DC and after the transition to electrified railway lines with 15 kV, 16.7 Hertz AC . In addition to the different power systems, differences in safety technology, wheel flanges , radio, etc. must also be taken into account.

Today the so-called Karlsruhe model (also known as tram-train abroad ) is a model for many other cities in Germany and abroad that are planning or have already implemented a light rail system on tram and rail routes (e.g. Saarbrücken ) because of the enormous increase in passengers and Kassel ).
