geography

Oberöwisheim lies in the hilly landscape of the Kraichgau . The municipal area is 942 ha.

history

First mentioned in 771 as Auwinsheim, the place was differentiated from Unteröwisheim in 1277. The Weissenburg Monastery had large possessions, but lost them to the Salians in 985 through the so-called " Salian church robbery " . The local rule was with the Kraichgaugrafen . From 1260 the Counts of Eberstein-Zweibrücken can be traced as feudal lords . Their successor in the local rule was the branch of the Lords of Helmstatt named after Oberöwisheim . A third of the place was from 1443 a Palatinate fief, two thirds of the place later came to the Hochstift Speyer , but was in a complicated inheritance (e.g. with Frankenstein, Balzhofen, Massenbach , Sternenfels , Schaffelitzky and Berg). After 1620, the Helmstatt and Sternenfels assigned the local Jews a barren hillside area as a cemetery . The feudal rights on the site were gradually bought up by the Speyer diocese from 1732. In 1748, the palatine sovereignty was replaced in exchange with Diedelsheim. In 1753 the Helmstatt waived their share in return for rounding off their property in Hochhausen. The estimate but remained only half continue the imperial knights in the Kraichgau .

During the Reformation none of the local rulers was able to fully enforce their confession, which is why both denominations have been represented on site since then. The church was therefore used simultaneously at the latest after the Thirty Years War . In 1803 Oberöwisheim came to Baden and initially belonged to the Office Odenheim , from 1807 to the Oberamt Gochsheim and in 1810 was assigned to the second Landamt Bruchsal . From 1819 Oberöwisheim belonged to the Oberamt or District Office Bruchsal . In 1876 the Catholic community built its own church and left the old village church entirely to the Protestant community of Oberöwisheim.

On September 1, 1971, Oberöwisheim merged with the cities of Gochsheim and Unteröwisheim as well as the communities of Bahnbrücken, Landshausen, Menzingen, Münzesheim, Neuenbürg and Oberacker to form the new city of Kraichtal .

In 2005 Oberöwisheim had 2004 inhabitants.
