Jewish cemetery in Oberöwisheim

The Jewish cemetery in Oberöwisheim , a district of the Kraichtal community in the Karlsruhe district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was laid out in the 17th century. It is a protected cultural monument .

The 91.35 ares large Jewish cemetery in Flur Reimenhälden is located on a steep slope, which is why the area was poorly used for agriculture. The manorial rule in the place was exercised at that time by the lords of Helmstatt and the lords of Sternenfels , who obtained permanent income by leasing the land. At no time did Jews live in Oberöwisheim itself.

history

Since Jews were not allowed to bury their dead in Christian cemeteries , the Kraichgau Jews had to bury their dead in the Jewish cemetery in Speyer (until 1435) and then in the Jewish cemetery in Worms . The Jewish cemetery in Oberöwisheim was established around 1629 as an association cemetery for the Kraichgau Jews. He owns 492 gravestones , the oldest from 1735 and the youngest from 1938. The second oldest Jewish cemetery in Kraichgau was built in Waibstadt in the second half of the 17th century . Gradually, other Jewish cemeteries were created, such as in Flehingen (1688), Eichtersheim (1781), Eppingen (1819), Michelfeld (1868), Berwangen (before 1877), Bad Rappenau (1881), Ittlingen (1887), Meckesheim (1896) and in Sinsheim (around 1890).

In the last decades of its occupancy, the Jewish cemetery in Oberöwisheim was only a burial place for the Jewish communities of Menzingen , Münzesheim and Odenheim .
