Jewish cemeteries in Karlsruhe

There were and are several Jewish cemeteries in Karlsruhe :

First cemetery

The first cemetery in the city of Karlsruhe was laid out in 1723 at what is now Mendelssohnplatz, expanded in 1756 and 1794 and closed in 1821.

In 1898 it was expropriated to make way for the widening of the war road . The remains were transferred to the current old cemetery.

Old graveyard

In 1823 a cemetery was created on the eastern Kriegsstrasse. Its wall borders on that of the then municipal cemetery. In 1896 it was closed.

In 1898 the deceased were brought here from the first leveled cemetery and their tombs were erected on the cemetery wall. Only a few graves were reburied individually, including that of Nathanael Weil . Until the 1930s there were still individual burials in family graves.

The Tahara house was demolished after the Second World War.

The cemetery is not open to the public. It is a listed building as a whole.

Orthodox cemetery

In 1872 the Orthodox Israelite Religious Society set up its own cemetery at the Karlsruhe main cemetery , which had just been created .

General cemetery

In 1897 the new general cemetery of the Jewish community found its place next to the Orthodox one.

At the cemetery building there is a plaque commemorating the First World War fallen , next to a memorial for the Holocaust murdered Jews Karlsruhe.

There is also a burial ground for Soviet prisoners of war on the site of the cemetery .

Grötzingen Jewish cemetery

Grötzingen

The small cemetery in Grötzingen was only occupied in the first third of the 20th century. It is laid out entirely with stone slabs and has 13 gravestones. It is a listed building.
