The Kriegsstraße is a street in Karlsruhe . As part of the federal highway 10 , it connects the west and east of Karlsruhe and thus forms a main artery. The street was laid out and named around 1800.

Location and course

Kriegsstrasse at the intersection of Kühler Krug in the Weststadt.

Kriegsstrasse is a central west-east connection south of Kaiserallee and -strasse . In the west, the road begins at the intersection with the Südtangente , continuing on Zeppelinstraße. Between the tram stop "cooler jug" and the Weinbrenner court also run on the track rails of the tramway .

After Kriegsstraße crosses Lessingstraße, it widens several times. At Karlstor the road runs in a single lane next to the former underpass, which was closed as part of the combined solution , until the start of construction work as part of the combined solution, there was also an underpass at Ettlinger Tor. From Mendelssohnplatz , the B10 continues on Ludwig-Erhard-Allee, while Kriegsstrasse itself, after a break, runs further north parallel to Ludwig-Erhard-Allee until shortly before Gottesaue Castle .

The Hereditary Grand Ducal Palace , seat of the Federal Court of Justice , is located in the west of the city center along Kriegstrasse . At Ettlinger Tor the street leads past the shopping center of the same name Ettlinger Tor Karlsruhe , further east it passes the Badisches Staatstheater .

history

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Kriegsstraße was laid out outside the city gates Karlstor , Ettlinger Tor and Rüppurrer Tor as a bypass road for armed forces moving through, with the aim of protecting the Karlsruhe population. From 1799 to 1805, the part from the Ettlinger Tor to the east was built, and in 1809 and 1810 it was extended to the west.

Karlsruhe's first train station was built between 1841 and 1843 on Kriegsstrasse east of Ettlinger Tor . In 1884 and 1885 it was expanded and rebuilt.

In 1879 the Bürklin Palace was built on Kriegsstrasse. At the end of the 19th century a widening of the war road was started. In the course of this, the first Jewish cemetery in Karlsruhe, which was built in 1723 on what is now Mendelssohnplatz, was expropriated in 1898.

When the old station hindered further expansion of the city in the following years, the construction of a new station south of it was decided in 1902 and this opened in 1913, whereby the old station lost its importance. The station building was initially used as a market hall, in its place is now the Badische Staatstheater, completed in 1975.

During the First World War , air raids also targeted buildings on Kriegsstrasse. Air bombs also hit the area around Kriegsstrasse during the Second World War, including the destruction of the Bürklin Palace.

A traffic route plan for Karlsruhe was drawn up from the mid-1950s. At the end of 1961, the plan was approved by the local council, which included an expansion of the Kriegsstrasse. In the course of the expansion, several monuments were relocated. In 1965 the underpass of the Kriegsstraße at Ettlinger Tor was opened to traffic, in 1972 the underpass at Karlstor.

The pedestrian underpasses at Ettlinger-Tor-Platz and at the Badisches Staatstheater were inaugurated in 1966, and the pedestrian bridge on Lammstrasse opened shortly afterwards.

In 1982, the buildings of the former Moninger brewery were largely demolished and residential and business premises were built on the site.

In 1996, the level crossing on Wolfartsweierer Strasse was removed, which went hand in hand with the demolition of the freight station at Rüppurrer Tor and the start of construction on Kriegsstrasse Ost . This eastern section, from Mendelssohnplatz via the Wolfartsweierer Strasse roundabout to Durlacher Allee , was opened to traffic in 1998. In 2007 the section was renamed Ludwig-Erhard-Allee. The lane of the old Kriegsstrasse was retained as a residential lane east of Ostendstrasse and also retained its name. In the course of the development of the area north of Ludwig-Erhard-Allee, this will be lifted in sections.

tunnel

As part of the construction work on the combination solution , the Kriegsstrasse will be completely rebuilt. Road traffic, which was previously routed in parts through underpasses, will in future be led through a continuous car tunnel. The 1,403 meter long tunnel leads from the west of the Karlstor to Ostendstrasse in Ludwig-Erhard-Allee. Separate ramps are planned for the shopping center at Ettlinger Tor as well as on Ritterstrasse and Lammstrasse. A tram route, cycle paths and avenues are planned above ground. Stops are to be created at Karlstor, Ettlinger Tor and Mendelssohnplatz. The tunnel has been under construction since 2017 and should be completed by 2022.
