The Ettlinger Tor Karlsruhe (commonly known as the ECE Center ) is a shopping center opened in 2005 by the Hamburg-based ECE Group in downtown Karlsruhe .
description
It is one of the largest inner-city shopping centers in southern Germany and employs 1,000 people. There are around 130 shops on a total of 33,000 square meters of retail space, and restaurants are also located on an area of 4,000 square meters . The center consists of a passage that is roofed with a more than 130 meter long glass vault and in which shops are arranged on three floors on both sides. This passage crosses the built-up street block diagonally from Ettlinger-Tor-Platz to Friedrichsplatz .
history
The center is named after the neighboring Ettlinger Tor , or Ettlinger-Tor-Platz. Ettlinger-Tor-Platz is the name given to the intersection of the multi-lane thoroughfare Kriegsstraße / B10 with Ettlinger Straße / Karl-Friedrich-Straße ( Via Triumphalis ), where there was once a southern Karlsruhe city gate. The groundbreaking ceremony for the shopping center took place on June 17, 2003. For the construction, the Friedrich List School had to be demolished, which was rebuilt elsewhere. Also since 1985 in a monumental building at Rondellplatz -based Chamber Theater Karlsruhe had to move. The outside facade of the building was preserved and integrated into the shopping center. Part of the former Karlsruhe Federal Railway Directorate , the Hotel Friedrichshof and two smaller buildings also had to give way. After a year of construction, the topping-out ceremony took place on September 15, 2004.
After more than two years, the shopping center was opened on September 7, 2005 in the presence of the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Günther Oettinger .
In 2007 the shopping center received an “ICSC European Shopping Center Award” in the “Medium” size category.
Large parts of the shopping center were modernized between spring 2015 and autumn 2016.
New tram tunnel access
As part of the large-scale combined solution construction site, the center will have its own tram tunnel access in the basement, which is expected to go into operation in mid-2021. In addition, the car park spindle is to be connected underground to the new car tunnel at a later date.
