The Ettlinger Tor was one of six former city gates of Karlsruhe . This gate was built in 1803 according to plans by the architect Friedrich Weinbrenner .

history

Sculpture "Ettlinger Tor"

The gate was commissioned by the then Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden in 1803 to commemorate the conquest of Palatinate territories and to celebrate the rise of the margrave to electoral prince.

The exterior design of Ettlinger Tor was modeled on the entrance area of a Greek temple . The pillars of the city gate were built in the Doric style . On both sides of the gate there was a sentry box for the gate guards. At that time, the Ettlinger Tor formed the end of the Via Triumphalis , the city's central boulevard, which stretched from the Karlsruhe Palace to the Ettlinger Tor.

In 1872 the Ettlinger Tor was demolished because its condition was dilapidated and restoration was no longer worthwhile. In addition, the space around the Ettlinger Tor was expanded. The Badisches Staatstheater and the ECE shopping center are located at Ettlinger Tor today .

From 1998 to 2011 the sculpture of the same name by the sculptor Andreas Helmling stood on Ettlinger-Tor-Platz . This was dismantled in the course of the tunneling (see combined solution ) of Karl-Friedrich-Straße and rebuilt on the south bypass in the clover of junction 3 (Ettlinger Allee). The sculpture recreated the original appearance of the gate.

Others

In the past there were six different city gates in Karlsruhe. Besides the Ettlinger Tor, these were the Durlacher Tor , the Linkenheimer Tor , the Rüppurrer Tor , the Karlstor and the Mühlburger Tor . The former city gates of Karlsruhe are still in use today in various ways. There are several tram stops in Karlsruhe that have the names of the gates in their designation.
