South bypass between Entenfang and Kühler Krug

The Südtangente is one of the most important feeder and bypass roads of Karlsruhe . The road, planned by the city of Karlsruhe under its own responsibility and built from 1970 to 1988, connects the federal highway 3 and the federal highway 5 in the east of the city with the Rhine bridge Maxau in the west and mainly serves to handle inner-city target and source traffic.

description

The southern bypass begins at the Zündhütle in Wolfartsweier and leads south past Karlsruhe city center. Between Kühlem Krug and the Rhine Bridge near Maxau , it is designated as Bundesstraße 10 . In the further section up to exit no.1 it bears the designation K 9657 as a district road , east of it up to the connection to the Wolfartsweier bypass it is called K 9652. Since the completion of the Wolfartsweier bypass, the eastern end of the southern bypass to the Zündhütle has been part of federal road 3 The structural responsibility therefore lies partly with the federal government and partly with the city of Karlsruhe.

Crossing at the Kühlen Krug

Between the connection to the A 5 at junction no. 45 Karlsruhe-Mitte and the Rhine bridge, the southern bypass with two structurally separate lanes is built similar to a motorway. This also applies to the continuation across the Rhine towards Wörther Kreuz to the A 65 . Both lanes have at least two, and in sections also three lanes. The maximum speed is limited in sections to 80 km / h or 100 km / h. There are several stationary systems for speed monitoring in both directions of travel. From the Knielingen exit to the beginning of the B 3, the southern bypass is a motor road .

The road between the districts of Beiertheim and Bulach is enclosed over a length of around 600 meters . A green area has been built above the Edeltrudtunnel and it crosses under the railroad tracks leading to Karlsruhe main station. Another tunnel, around 120 meters long, passes under the tracks of the freight yard.

In rush hour traffic, especially in the event of an accident, long backlogs quickly occur, which can also extend over the Rhine bridge.

Numbering of the exits

The numbering of the exits is from east to west and begins after the Karlsruhe-Mitte motorway junction. The aim of assigning numbers is to get a uniform designation for each exit or each destination, regardless of whether the approach is via the Rhine bridge or the A 5 (e.g. the main train station can always be reached via exit 2 ). The only exception to this is exit no.7.

Since there is one less exit in the west than in the opposite direction, there is also number 9 on the signpost and in the city map for exit no.8.

history

The southern bypass, like the northern bypass , was part of the Karlsruhe transport route plan approved by the local council in 1961 after five years of planning. On November 11, 1970, the first construction phase between Ölkreuz and Honsellstrasse was approved. The route from the duck catching to the Bulacher Kreuz with the crossing structure at the restaurant Kühler Krug , which was relocated for road construction, was inaugurated on July 9, 1975. On December 18, 1981, the handover of the section between Killisfeldstrasse and Schwarzwaldstrasse was celebrated. On June 24, 1988, the last section with the tunnel structures near Beiertheim-Bulach was put into operation and the Karlsruhe-Mitte motorway connection was opened at the same time.
