Durlacher Tor is a busy place in Karlsruhe . It is located at the eastern end of the main shopping street, Kaiserstraße, between the city districts of Innenstadt-Ost and Oststadt and is named after the city gate that used to stand there . North-west of the Durlacher Tor is the south campus of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

history

The Durlacher Tor itself was built in 1772 by Wilhelm Jeremias Müller in the Ionic style . It was located at the entrance of today's Durlacher Allee , which leads from Karlsruhe city center to Durlach . There was a guard house to the right. The gate was demolished in 1875 to make way for the increasing traffic.

traffic

Today there is an important transfer point for tram and light rail passengers at this city entrance, still known as “Durlacher Tor”. The Karlsruhe districts of Rintheim , Waldstadt , Durlach and the city center can be reached directly by train from the Durlacher Tor stop . As part of the combined solution , an underground tram stop has been under construction here since 2011. After completion, trains will run both underground and above ground across the square. After the stop was relocated about 150 meters west to Kaiserstraße in September 2011 and had the title “Durlacher Tor / KIT Campus Süd”, it has been back in its old location under its old name since January 2019.

In addition to Kaiserstraße and Durlacher Allee, Kapellenstraße ends at Durlacher Tor or the Bernhardusplatz to the north, which connects to Kriegsstraße ( Bundesstraße 10 ), Karl-Wilhelm-Straße towards Rintheim and Waldstadt, Adenauerring towards KIT- Main entrance and Wildpark Stadium as well as Gottesauer Straße.
