history
The district was created at the same time as Karlsruhe was founded. When work began on building the palace, the south-eastern area of the east of the city center was initially known as Klein-Karlsruhe or Dörfle . The former meadow area was assigned by the authorities to the workers and later also soldiers and court servants. They first built one-story barracks on this. In 1795, at the request of the residents, Klein-Karlsruhe was raised to a village parish by the margrave. In 1802, questions arose for the first time about a union with the previously independent community of Klein-Karlsruhe in the Karlsruhe city administration, but without result. On August 22, 1812, Karlsruhe and Klein-Karlsruhe were united.
The University of Karlsruhe was founded in 1825. The wildlife park stadium was built from 1952 .
On the eastern edge of the area was the Durlacher Tor , one of the city gates of Karlsruhe.
Attractions
Parts of the palace park belong to the east of the city center. There is also the Margravial Palace designed by the architect Friedrich Weinbrenner and the Pheasant Castle (Karlsruhe) . On the grounds of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology there are some remarkable buildings, including the Englervilla and the courtyard as well as some monuments to former university scientists, including the Heinrich Hertz monument and the Ferdinand Redtenbacher bust .
