The Kronenplatz is a square in the east of Karlsruhe's inner city . It was created in the course of the renovation of the village and was given its name in 1974. The square is delimited by Kronenstrasse, Kaiserstrasse and Fritz-Erler-Strasse. The square consists of two parts of different height levels, on the square there is a fountain and a water feature. On the northern edge of the square there is a daily market with a changing selection, in the southern part there is a covered boule alley .

In March 2014, the Karlsruhe municipal council described the square as a problem child because it was inconspicuous and rarely used. In addition, it is often criticized that there is a lack of green spaces on the square.

There is a tram stop of the same name on the square. An underground stop is being built as part of the combined solution transport project .

Naming

The name of the Kronenplatz goes back to the adjacent Kronenstrasse, which was named after the inn Zur Goldenen Krone , which no longer exists today .

history

Before the renovation of the village, today's area of the square was built on. In the course of the renovation in the 1960s, the existing buildings were largely demolished. The only building from the time before the renovation is the Hohenzollernhaus, built around 1890, which is a listed building.

The division of the village by the Fritz-Erler-Strasse, completed in 1968 and running in north-south direction, was overcome by building a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. A structure was erected in the middle of the bridge, the so-called bridge restaurant . In order to reduce the difference in height to the bridge, the Zähringerstraße leading to the bridge from the east and west was converted into a ramp and the square itself was partially raised about one meter above the surrounding area. Thus the Kronenplatz consisted of two parts of the square, separated by a difference in height.

The Jubez youth and meeting center was built along the ramp in 1980 . During the design, emphasis was placed on taking into account and taking up the existing effect of the Hohenzollern House. Around the same time, condominiums and social housing as well as a small open market hall, which was intended to accommodate market stalls, were built on the southwestern edge of the square. Furthermore, a fountain was built in 1984. A small park was created on the undeveloped square.

At the end of the 1980s, the cosmetics manufacturer L'Oréal expressed interest in relocating its German headquarters to Kronenplatz. The company stated that the previous location in Karlsruhe would be given up entirely if the plans could not be realized. As a result, an association was founded that campaigned for the preservation of the Kronenplatz as an open space. There was a public petition and consequently 1988, a referendum instead, which, however, failed.

Since the city feared the loss of numerous jobs, an agreement was reached in 1989 to hold an architectural competition for development. The first proposal was to install a glass roof over Kronenplatz. In the end, however, the decision was made for the design of the second prize winner, which included a shopping mall in the northern section. With the decision of the city, the property was sold to L'Oréal.

In 1990, however, L'Oréal abandoned its plans and instead moved the planned location to Düsseldorf. The United Insurance then took over the role of the investor and followed the previous drafts on. Construction work began in 1991 and was completed in 1994. First, a two-story underground car park was realized below the square. Subsequently, the building complex was grouped around an inner courtyard and opened on steel girders to Kaiserstrasse.

Fool's fountain and water feature

The fountain, built in 1984, was renewed in 1997 as the so-called fool's fountain. A harlequin statue , designed by Markus Lüpertz , sits on the fountain . Furthermore, on the edge of the fountain, there are tiles with the city coat of arms and logos of numerous Karlsruhe carnival clubs .

In 2002, the square was rebuilt and in the course of this a large-scale, partly accessible water feature was created at the transition between the various height levels. Such a water feature was already considered in the plans from 1989 in order to conceal the separating effect of the ramp.
