The Lidellplatz is a place in Karlsruhe Downtown East . It is located at the intersection between Steinstrasse, Markgrafenstrasse and Adlerstrasse. At the northeast corner of the triangular square is the Lidell fountain with Lidell bust, at the northwest corner a playground and in the middle of the square another fountain. Its triangular shape is due to the fact that the Karlsruhe Landgraben ran on one side.

Naming

The name of Lidellplatz goes back to Christoph Friedrich Lidell (1720–1793), who was chamber councilor in Karlsruhe in the 18th century.

history

The square was laid out in 1790 in the then still independent community of Klein-Karlsruhe under the name Spitalplatz, named after the citizens' hospital located there at the time. There was a regular hay and wood market there. In 1893 the square was renamed Lidellplatz. In 1889 the area was redesigned into a green area, in the course of which the sculptor Hermann Volz was commissioned to design a fountain in honor of Lidell. Lidellplatz has had its current appearance since 1980.

Joseph Victor von Scheffel was born in 1826 in Steinstrasse on Lidellplatz.

The Lidell fountain was built by Hermann Volz in 1872–1876. There is a bust of Lidell on the fountain. The fountain stands as cultural monument under monument protection . In 1975 it was replaced by a copy, as the preservation of the original was no longer justifiable. The bronze bust was also replaced by a replica to guarantee its preservation. The original was taken over into the collection of the city museum .

In addition to the Lidell fountain, there is a second fountain in the middle of the square.
