The Karl-Friedrich-Strasse is a street in the Karlsruhe city center. As part of the Via Triumphalis , it runs along the city's central north-south axis.

Location and course

Karl-Friedrich-Strasse forms a section of Via Triumphalis , the central north-south street in the city center, and thus separates the two districts of city center-east and city center-west .

In the north, the street is bounded by the circle , followed by the square of the basic rights and behind it the palace square . The southern boundary is the Ettlinger Tor or the crossing Kriegsstraße , in the southern direction the street continues through Ettlinger Straße. At the level of Hebelstrasse, the road crosses the Landgraben .

Karl-Friedrich-Straße runs across both the market square and the Rondellplatz . Due to the central location, there are some important buildings along the street, including the town hall , the Grand Ducal District Office , the Evangelical City Church and the Margravial Palace . The Ettlinger Tor Karlsruhe shopping center is also on the street.

The northern end, between Zirkel and Kaiserstraße , is a pedestrian zone .

history

The origins of Karl-Friedrich-Strasse go back to the founding of the city of Karlsruhe. In 1718 the street was given its first name Carlsgasse . Until the end of the 18th century, Karlsruhe only extended to the south as far as the Konkordienkirche , which was located in the area of today's market square. In 1768, the French builder Philippe de La Guêpière drew up plans for an expansion of the city to the south. As a result, it was decided in 1772 to demolish the Konkordienkirche and to extend the central north-south axis. As a result, the first houses were built south of the Konkordienkirche. An emergency bridge was built over the ditch in this direction in 1784 , and in 1790 it was arched. In 1807 the Konkordienkirche was finally demolished.

In 1843, the old Karlsruhe main station was opened at the southern end of Karl-Friedrich-Strasse . Since further expansion of the city was hampered by the increasing rail traffic and the long waiting times at the level crossings, the new train station was built one kilometer south of it at the beginning of the 20th century. The old train station lost its importance. Today, Kriegsstrasse borders Karl-Friedrich-Strasse in the south.

Construction work of the combined solution

As part of the combined solution , a project to further develop the tram network in Karlsruhe , a number of construction measures have been taking place on Karl-Friedrich-Strasse since 2011. The southern branch of the underground tunnel is to lead under Karl-Friedrich-Straße and further under Ettlinger Straße to Augartenstraße, with the Marktplatz underground station in the northern section and the Ettlinger Tor underground station in the southern section of the Karl-Friedrich-Strasse. The measures are intended to make Karl-Friedrich-Strasse tram-free.

Surname

After the city was founded, the street was initially called Carlsgasse . In 1741 the street was renamed Bärengasse , 1787 Schloßgasse and later Schloßstraße . In 1844 the street was finally given its current name, named after Karl Friedrich .
