Evangelical City Church Karlsruhe
The Evangelical City Church is a Protestant church built in the early 19th century in the city center of Karlsruhe . It is the preaching position of the regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Baden and thus the main church of the regional church.
history
The city church was built according to plans by Friedrich Weinbrenner and according to the specifications of Grand Duke Karl Friedrich von Baden as the cathedral church of the state of Baden on the market square . The foundation stone was laid on June 8, 1807, and the church was consecrated on June 2, 1816 ( Pentecost ).
During the Second World War , the church was badly damaged and then rebuilt under the direction of Horst Linde , based on the original plans on the outside and modern on the inside. The newly built church was consecrated on November 30, 1958 by the then regional bishop Julius Bender .
The lower church originally served as the burial place of the Grand Ducal family. Therefore it was also called the grand ducal court church . The coffins were transferred to the mausoleum in the pheasant garden in 1946 .
architecture
The Grand Duke greatly influenced the appearance of the church. It is designed according to the basic features of a Roman temple . The flat-roofed gallery is preceded by a columned portico of the Corinthian order . There are courtyards and secular wing structures on both sides. The bell tower is 61.70 meters high and 150 steps lead to its platform. The Angel of Peace on the top of the tower is 2.70 m high. It could be poured according to a preserved shape and shows where the wind is blowing from. The tower houses a large ring of five bells from the Bachert bell foundry from 1958 in the disposition as 0 –c 1 –es 1 –f 1 –as 1 .
organ
In the city church there was a large organ until 1944 , which dates back to the instrument built in 1751 by Johann Andreas Silbermann and his brother Johann Daniel for the Villingen collegiate church . This came to the newly built collegiate church as a gift from the Grand Duke of Baden, Karl Friedrich, and was technically modernized and greatly expanded in several stages until it was destroyed. After the church had been rebuilt, a new instrument from GF Steinmeyer & Co. with electric keyboard and stop action was inaugurated in 1957 .
