Tombs of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden and his wife Princess Luise of Prussia

The clients were the Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden and his wife Luise of Prussia : the reason for this was the early death of their youngest son Ludwig Wilhelm . The parents wished to be able to commemorate him far from the noise of the city “in the seclusion of the deep forest peace”. Because until now the rulers of Baden had been buried in the castle church of St. Michael in Pforzheim or in the crypt of the Karlsruhe city church - places that the grand ducal couple could not visit without public attention.

The burial chapel is located in the Lärchenallee of the Hardtwald , on the edge of the pheasant garden between Adenauerring and Klosterweg, opposite the Hans-Dickmann-Kolleg. It is one of the most atmospheric monuments in Baden's history .

The exterior of the burial chapel, with its proportions and the deliberately high crossing tower , is oriented towards a distant view. Pinnacles , gargoyles and dragon figures, imaginative works by the Karlsruhe sculptor Sauer, adorn the building.

The light-flooded interior of the upper church is characterized by rows of columns standing on top of one another, the upper row of which is made of black, shimmering Labrador. They have sandstone consoles and a wooden barrel vault with ornate belt arches. Four angel heads made of light yellow limestone enliven the crossing. Decorative forms such as leaf friezes and leaf capitals can be found everywhere. Stone lizards hide in the leaves of the apse frieze. Hermann Volz furnished the upper church with magnificent marble graves for Prince Ludwig Wilhelm, Grand Duke Friedrich I and his wife Luise of Prussia.

Wide steps lead down from the upper church into the crypt . A bright and friendly room opens behind a two-part wrought-iron gate. In this there are 18 coffins; the last funeral was in 1952.

The Grand Ducal Sepulchral Chapel is one of the state's own monuments and is looked after by the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg . Since 2011, the upper church can be visited from April to October during the respective opening times. The crypt can only be visited as part of special tours.

List of those buried in the crypt
