Ludwig II (Baden)
Ludwig II, Grand Duke of Baden (born August 15, 1824 in Karlsruhe ; † January 22, 1858 there ) was Grand Duke of the Grand Duchy of Baden from 1852 to 1856 . His younger brother Friedrich ruled as regent for him .

Grand Duke Ludwig II was the son of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden (1790-1852) and Sophie Wilhelmine von Holstein-Gottorp , Princess of Sweden (1801-1865). He was the grandson of Karl Friedrich (1728-1811) and Luise Karoline Geyer von Geyersberg , Countess of Hochberg (1768-1820).
Life
Grand Duke Ludwig II was born on August 15, 1824. Together with his brother Friedrich , who was two years his junior , he received a very modern upbringing. Trips to Northern Italy and the Netherlands brought variety to the everyday life of the siblings. From December 1842 to May 1843, Ludwig and Friedrich met the most important men in the metropolis of the Habsburg Empire in Vienna ; She enthusiastically absorbed the pulsating city life. The stay in Vienna was clouded by a serious illness of Friedrich. Ludwig later studied temporarily at the University of Heidelberg .
As Prince of the House of Baden, Ludwig was a member of the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly from 1842 to 1852 , but only attended the meetings in person in 1842 and 1846. In March 1852 Ludwig was declared incapable of government because of an "incurable mental illness" . On April 24, 1852, he received the title of Grand Duke of Baden, but had to leave the official business to his brother Friedrich , who in 1856 also assumed the title of Grand Duke.
Ludwig II of Baden was an honorary citizen of the city of Karlsruhe . He died at the age of 33. After the death of his brother, Grand Duke Friedrich I wrote a poor life full of misery and suffering .
