Franz Baer (born October 4, 1850 in Karlsruhe , † July 3, 1891 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German architect .

Franz Baer was a son of Franz Josef Baer (1809–1890), the head of the senior management of Baden's water and road construction. Franz Baer studied at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe from 1868 to 1873 , then at the Berlin Building Academy . In 1875 he took up a job at the grand ducal railway construction directorate in Mannheim, one year later he changed employers and was now working as an architect in Mannheim for the archiepiscopal building authority in Heidelberg. In this function he was responsible for the new construction of the St. Laurentius emergency church in Mannheim- Neckarstadt, based on plans by Wilhelm Lutz . He then worked at the archiepiscopal building authority in Freiburg, where he was responsible for the restoration of the St. Stephen's Cathedral in Breisach . In 1880, as the successor to the late Lukas Engesser , he was appointed archbishop's master builder and shortly thereafter the title of archbishop's building inspector.

His work included numerous church restorations, including the Konstanz Minster , the Georgskirche in Reichenau-Oberzell, the Martinskirche and Konviktskirche in Freiburg and the Salem Minster . He was also entrusted with work at the Freiburg Minster , such as the restoration of the tower porch. Elected to the city council in 1881, he was involved in numerous projects as a consultant for building construction. He did not live to see the proposed appointment as master builder of the Freiburg Minster because he died in 1891.

His tomb in Freiburg's main cemetery is adorned with a bronze portrait created by Gustav Adolf Knittel and taken by Wilhelm Walliser .
