Neckarstadt-West is an urban district and district of Mannheim immediately north of the Neckar , west of the Kurpfalzbrücke .

geography

The Neckar, which flows into the Rhine on the Friesenheimer Insel , gives its name and separates the Neckarstadt from the city center to the south. Borders are the Neckar and Rhine in the west, Neckarstadt-Ost to the east and Sandhofen and Waldhof to the north . The city district includes the Alte Meßplatz , Mittelstrasse with its surrounding road network, the Erlenhofsiedlung and the Friesenheimer Insel with the Altrheinhafen and the industrial port .

history

Today's Neckarstadt-West has its origins in the former "Neckar Gardens". From 1679, these were laid out north of the Neckar on the "Pflügersgrund" as community gardens and at the end of 1682 they were given to 560 citizens for use. In 1860 60 families with 260 people lived there, mostly gardeners, tradespeople and craftsmen.

After two troughs on the other side of the Neckar were initially released for rebuilding in 1871, it was decided in 1872 to lay out the "Neckarvorstadt", the new Mannheim district. In 1876 the folk festival, the Mannheimer Mess , moved from the city center to the Messplatz, built around 1870 on the other side of the Neckar, today known as the “Alter Messplatz”. In 1879 the Riedbahn Neckarvorstadt - Lampertheim - Worms with a train station on the Neckarbrücke was opened. By 1887 the land in seven squares between Messplatz, Mittelstrasse and Dammstrasse had been sold. The garden layout was retained for other streets. At the end of 1890 the (entire) Neckarstadt had 9,660 inhabitants and further development took place quickly, including Volksbad (1890), gas supply (1883), Hildaschule (1894), Markt (1898), new Mannheim-Neckarvorstadt train station (1901). The originally numbered cross streets were given their names in 1902. Neckarstadt-West benefited from the construction of the industrial port after 1897.

The residential development was largely completed around 1914. 1926-27 the Erlenhofsiedlung was built. Relatively undestroyed by the war, the district has the largest number of Wilhelminian-style houses in all of Mannheim. The former numbering is still preserved today in the street names "Zehntstraße" (10th cross street) and "Elfenstraße" (11th cross street) as well as in the vernacular "Nineteenth" for Lupinenstraße .

politics

Neckarstadt-West is one of the six inner city districts. According to the main statute of the city of Mannheim, the city district has a district advisory council, which includes 12 residents who are appointed by the local council according to the results of the local council election. They are to be heard on important matters that affect the municipality and advise the local administration and committees of the municipal council.

The Riedbahn was built in 1879 . Coming from the Waldhof, the tracks led west around the Neckarstadt, then south along the Neckar and ended at what is now the Kurpfalzbrücke at Mannheim-Neckarstadt station ("Riedbahnhof"). It was not until 1985 that the tracks were expanded with the new western introduction of the Riedbahn and the Riedbahnbrücke West over the Neckar and the commercial port to the main station . There is a new Neckarstadt stop on this route , so that the Neckarstadt-West district - as it was until the end of the 1970s - has since been accessible again by rail.

Lines 1 and 3 run in the east of Neckarstadt-West, through Waldhofstraße. The route of Line 2 runs through Neckarstadt-West. Line 4 also stops at the Alter Messplatz. All lines are operated by RNV .

District life

The Neckarstadt-West is an urban district with the largest listed old buildings. Compared to other locations in Mannheim, cheaper living space can be rented here. As a district, it is particularly popular with artists and students due to its urban character, proximity to the city center and diversity. However, the district is also considered a problem area , which is why development measures “for local urban renewal” have been taken. According to the Mannheim Social Atlas, it is a district with above-average social problems. The gentrification of the district is progressing from the old measuring site in the east. Neckarstadt-West has one of the highest proportions of the population with a migration background in Mannheim . A total of around 22,000 people from over 100 nations live here.

Many cultural institutions are located in Neckarstadt-West: The Capitol, a former cinema, was built in 1927, has a striking architecture and is now a nationally known concert hall. The theater oliv is a free theater, located directly on the old measuring place. With the one-room house, there is also another cultural facility directly at the Alter Messplatz. The history workshop found its home in the basement of the Alte Volksbad. The old public bath itself has meanwhile taken on the function of a creative industry center.

Cultural highlights are certainly the Lichtmeile culture festival and the steam noodle festival every year.

The Neckar and its promenade are also popular excursion destinations. The “Erlenhof” adventure playground is particularly interesting for children. Here volleyball can be played, skateboarding and go-karting. There are also numerous shopping opportunities for daily needs.
