The garden city is a district of Mannheim that is part of the Waldhof district . It is considered the greenest district of Mannheim.

history

The garden city owes its name to the garden city movement from England. The concept of the garden city was designed as a reaction to the poor housing and living conditions at the time of industrialization . Settlements with small houses on large plots of land were to be built on the outskirts of large cities in order to enable the residents to be close to the city and do industrial work as well as healthy nutrition by growing their own fruit and vegetables.

In 1910 the " Gartenvorstadt-Genossenschaft Mannheim " was founded and the Mannheim architects Hermann Esch and Arno Anke were responsible for planning the new district. In the spring of 1912, approval was given for the first partial plan with 130 apartments. The first houses, mainly single-family houses with 38 three-room and two four-room apartments, were completed on October 1, 1912 at the Waldpforte, Waldstrasse and Langer Schlag. From 1913, 116 families lived in the new district. In the "old garden city", which is under monument protection, 420 single-family houses were built. Starting in 1925, plots of land to the east of the "old garden city" were given to private individuals. Many of the houses were clad with wooden shingles like the typical Black Forest houses . On June 2, 1926, the city of Mannheim founded the Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft Mannheim mbH (GBG) to promote social housing and built houses and courtyards in the garden city that bordered on the settlement area and were planned for large families. The first settlers' houses were also built in the garden city from 1930. A large piece of land owned by the city was divided into plots for this purpose . Unemployed people then cleared the site together and built houses that were raffled among the helpers. Today, however, the typical settler houses hardly exist any more. In the following years, the remaining open spaces north of the Waldstrasse and between the Riedbahntrasse of the Deutsche Bahn and Lampertheimer Weg, including the area Am Hochwald, were developed and developed. Individual construction phases have their own name to this day, e.g. B. Neueichwald I, Neueichwald II, Kirchwaldsiedlung, the Höfe and Am Hochwald. The development of the open meadow area at the Waldpforte by a discount store was not carried out due to objections from citizens.

At the beginning of 2013, the implementation of the major project “Stadtbahn Mannheim Nord” of the city of Mannheim and Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH began with the strong participation of the people of Gartenstadt. It connected the garden city as one of the last remaining districts to the city's tram network and was finally completed on schedule in summer 2016. One of the two new terminals was created on the aforementioned open meadow area at the forest gate. The counterpart is on the Quiet Way, the east end of the garden city.
