Imani Francesca Coppola (born April 6, 1978 in New York ) is an American pop singer and rapper .

biography

Coppola comes from a musical family, her father was a keen jazz musician and like her siblings, she learned to play the violin in her youth. She studied music at State University in New York and came to a record deal with Columbia Records during this time . In 1997 she had her first success with the single Legend of a Cowgirl . The song was a hip-hop song on a sample from Sunshine Superman by Donovan based. It became a top 40 hit in the US and then hit the charts in many other countries as well. Her debut album Chupacabra could not benefit from it and was unsuccessful despite good reviews.

Then she tried to assert her own musical ideas, but could not prevail against her label Columbia Records , which is why there was no further release and the end of the record contract. She mainly worked as a classical violinist, but continued her pop career on her own and continued to produce her own records. In 2001 Imani Coppola had another international hit with the Baha Men with You All Dat .

Between 2000 and 2007 she recorded seven albums, most of which she distributed herself through her website. She was able to place two of them with professional labels, Afrodite (2004) with Mental Records and The Black and White Album (2007) with Ipecac Recordings . Ipecac is the label of Mike Patton , in whose project Peeping Tom she participated as a singer and violinist.

Little Jackie

In 2008 Imani Coppola teamed up with Adam Pallin, whom she met through her producer Michael Mangini. The multi-instrumentalist and DJ Pallin had worked with Tom Jones and Elliot Yamin from American Idol . They founded the duo Little Jackie , the name of which was based, among other things, on the song Little Jackie Wants to Be a Star by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam . Musically, they resorted to late-60s soul and hip-hop and thus produced the album The Stoop . The pre-released single The World Should Revolve Around Me became a hit in the UK in August 2008. The success of the album, however, fell well short of expectations.
