Neckarstadt-Ost is one of the six inner city districts and a district of Mannheim and is located on the right bank of the Neckar .

geography

The city district is connected to the city center by two road bridges, the Kurpfalzbrücke and the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke , over which the federal highway 38 leads. Both bridges are also used by trams. In addition, a pedestrian bridge, which is also known as the Neckarsteg , connects the north bank of the Neckar with the Collini Center in the east of the city . Neighboring districts are Feudenheim , City Center , Käfertal , Schwetzingerstadt / Oststadt , Waldhof and Neckarstadt-West .

The city district has been divided into four districts since January 1, 2020. To the west of the B 38 is the densely populated Neckarstadt-Ost , to the north bordering Herzogenried and the Neckarstadt-Nordost . To the east of the main road is the district of Wohlhotels (“well located”, in earlier times flood-proof on the Hochgestade above the Neckar).

history

In the Palatinate War of Succession , Mannheim was destroyed in 1689 and the residents had to flee. Few of the displaced settled on the sand hills on the other side of the Neckar (in "Wohlgend"), called their settlement "Neu-Mannheim" and lived a miserable life in poor huts. After the situation changed, they tore down their huts in 1699 and moved back into the city. However, this had no effect on the development of today's Neckarstadt-Ost.

In 1827 Paolo Giulini founded a chemical factory north of the Neckar on the Grohof in "Wohlgend", which in 1854 became part of the Association of Chemical Factories . In 1842 the new main cemetery on the other side of the Neckar was opened for its intended purpose. In the 1870s, a brewery was built on Käfertaler Straße on the site that had previously only been used as an underground beer warehouse, a forerunner of today's Eichbaum brewery . The crematorium went into operation in 1901. In the same year, the 110 grenadier regiment moved into the new Kaiser Wilhelm barracks (after 1945 US barracks Turley Barracks ) on the former parade ground.

In spring 1902 the streets in the former Gewann Lange Rötter were given their names as part of the beginning of residential development. Another area followed in the area between the brewery and the barracks. The state prison ( Mannheim correctional facility ) was completed in 1909. The construction of the "Städtische Krankenanstalten" (today University Hospital Mannheim ) in the previous Neckarpark dragged on for years after 1910 and was only occupied in 1922, the Neckarpark closed in 1917 as a public facility. The Uhland School was completed in 1913, and the Melanchthon Church next to it in 1923 . After 1922, the bank of the Neckar was expanded above the Friedrichsbrücke (now the Kurpfalzbrücke) and 200 apartments were built on the Gewann Schafweide. In 1926 the Friedrich Ebert Bridge was opened.

In 1963 the Mannheimer Mess moved to the "Neue Meßplatz", after it had taken place at the " Alte Meßplatz " since 1876 . In the mid-1970s, the Herzogenried estate was built in chronological and spatial connection with the 1975 Federal Horticultural Show at Herzogenriedpark , which was built in stages from 1928. With the withdrawal of the US armed forces, the Turley barracks were given up in 2007 and are part of the conversion measures .

Economy and public institutions

The largest hospital in Mannheim, the university clinic and the city's main cemetery are located in Neckarstadt-Ost / Wohlhotels. The cultural centers Alte Feuerwache and Capitol are located at the Kurpfalzbrücke . In the north is the Mannheim correctional facility, the largest prison in Baden-Württemberg. The Herzogenriedpark forms a green oasis, near which is the Turley barracks ( US garrison Mannheim ), which was closed in 2007 and was founded as Kaiser Wilhelm barracks during the German Empire. The Eichbaum brewery is located in Wohlhotels. Here is also the headquarters of the regional daily newspaper Mannheimer Morgen , the private radio station Radio Regenbogen and Rhein-Neckar Fernsehen (RNF). The Alte Messplatz, which is flanked by the old fire station , the old train station and the Capitol, is the focal point between Neckarstadt-West and Neckarstadt-East.
