The Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke in Mannheim is the third Neckar crossing built after the Kurpfalzbrücke and Jungbuschbrücke . It leads Friedrich-Ebert-Straße ( B 38 ) past the Mannheim Clinic over the Neckar and flows into the city center between Theresienkrankenhaus and the AOK administration building.

history

After the turn of the century, Mannheim's population grew rapidly. The growing population, especially in the districts of Oststadt and Neckarstadt , led to the need for another bridge for road traffic and trams across the Neckar. It was built between 1925 and 1926 by the MAN Gustavsburg plant and inaugurated on December 23, 1926. Its architect was Adolf Abel . Overall, the construction costs amounted to 4.2 million Reichsmarks. During the Nazi era it was renamed the Adolf Hitler Bridge. On March 27, 1945, shortly before US troops marched into the Mannheim districts north of the Neckar, the Wehrmacht blew up the bridge. On May 1, 1945, the American troops erected a makeshift bridge . It was called Friedrich-Ebert -brücke again , was quickly repaired and reopened on May 1st, 1946. Due to the steadily growing volume of traffic, a second, similar bridge was built in 1963 for traffic out of town, right next to the first part on the east side. From the outside, it appears to be a single bridge.

Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke: start of the new construction in January 2006

In 2004 structural investigations revealed that the old part leading into the city was partially rusted through and showed irreparable damage. It was therefore necessary to build a new part of the bridge. In order to maintain traffic during the construction period, the new part of the bridge was built next to the old one. Construction work began at the end of 2005. By October 2006, the 80-year-old bridge section had been torn down, loaded onto ships and transported away. In the meantime, traffic into the city was already being directed over the new bridge and the tram was running in a single lane. Starting on Monday, November 6th, 2006 at 8 p.m., it was shifted sideways over Teflon-coated steel girders to the place of the previous structure over a period of a few days . This part of the bridge was also released in December 2006.

In the summer of 2014, the eastern lanes of the now 51-year-old Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke were renovated for 850,000 euros. The sealing and the transition structure were also renewed in order to make the bridge ready for further use.
