history

Theresienkrankenhaus
St. Hedwig Clinic

The Theresienkrankenhaus goes back to the Catholic Bürgerhospital, in which the sisters of the Alsatian order of the merciful sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul take care of the sick in 1792. From 1889, Freiburg nuns also ran a hospital in a converted dormitory in square T 5. The hospital at its current location was opened on December 15, 1929 with 350 beds. In 1945 the building was badly damaged in the war and rebuilt by 1954. In the following years the capacity was expanded to 800 beds. Due to an oversupply of gynecological beds, this department was closed in 1983 and the total number of beds was reduced to 670. In 2002 the extensive renovation work on the old building was completed.

The St. Hedwig Clinic goes back to a foundation that the Lanz family bequeathed to the city of Mannheim and was created in 1928 through the renovation of the two Lanz villas in square A2. Privy Councilor Heinrich Lanz and his wife Julia wanted that after their death the Buildings are to be made available to a charitable cause, has thus been put into practice. The nursing of the sick was done by the sisters of the Divine Savior from the Maria Hilf monastery in Bühl . The original addition "Wöchnerinnenheim" has not been used since the opening of the surgical department , since men have also been treated since then.

In 1995 the "Theresienkrankenhaus und St. Hedwig-Klinik GmbH" was established with the former sponsors of the two hospitals, the Freiburg Order of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent de Paul and the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer from the Maria Hilf monastery in Bühl as partners.

At the end of October 2017 it was announced that the clinic was to be sold in 2018. The background was the personal situation of the order with currently only 127 nuns with an average age of 80 years. With the aim of securing the future of the clinic in the sense of the order “on a Christian mission”, negotiations were started with the likewise Catholic BBT group . The sale was completed on January 1, 2019.
