Jungbusch Bridge

The Jungbuschbrücke is after Friedrichsbrücke, today Kurpfalzbrücke , the second Neckar crossing in Mannheim . It connects the Jungbusch district with the Neckarstadt district at Neckar kilometer 2.190 and leads the B 44 over the Neckar.

history

With the construction of the Friedrichsbrücke, a second crossing of the Neckar was considered by the city planning department. After a competition for architects was announced in 1900, the forerunner of the Jungbusch Bridge was built between 1905 and 1908 by the Philipp Holzmann company (Frankfurt) according to plans by the architect Hermann Billing , who also designed the Mannheim art gallery . In keeping with the times, it was built in Art Nouveau style. The total length was 242 meters (span of the arches 59.5 meters - 114 meters - 59.5 meters). It was initially referred to as the "Second Neckar Bridge".

In 1933 it was renamed Hindenburgbrücke . On March 25, 1945 it was blown up by the Wehrmacht . From the end of 1948, traffic ran over a temporary bridge.

At the end of the 1950s a new Jungbuschbrücke was built, but it could not regain its old splendor. An S-shaped construction was chosen, which was opened to traffic on September 19, 1957. At 239.4 meters (span of the arches 62.5 meters - 114.4 meters - 62.5 meters), it is a little shorter than its predecessor. The bridge has 4 lanes and 2 pedestrian / cycle paths (barrier-free access only on the downstream side). The speed limit of 50 km / h is monitored by PoliScan speed devices that are stationary on both sides .
