High-rise buildings of the Herzogenriedsiedlung

The Herzogenried settlement is a social housing complex in the "Herzogenried" district in the north of Mannheim 's Neckarstadt-Ost district .

A nationwide ideas competition was launched in 1970 to redesign the Herzogenried. The two winners, a joint project under Carlfried Mutschler (Mannheim) and Heinz Eckebrecht ( Frankfurt am Main ), as well as the Mannheim architects Gerhard Hauss and Hans Richter, were commissioned to plan the construction project. The settlement was finally built from 1974 to 1977 on the occasion of the National Garden Show in 1975 as a model settlement for living in the green . Through traffic from the residential area is excluded and there is direct access to the Herzogenriedpark . The approximately 2,000 apartments were built in up to 13-storey high-rise buildings made of prefabricated concrete parts typical of the time. The principal was the Mannheim housing association GBG.
