history

The former grand-ducal state prison in Herzogenried was built in the years 1905 to 1909 at its present location as a replacement for the "penitentiary" in square Q6 and put into operation in October 1909. The London Pentonville Prison with its radial building style served as a model . Between 1913 and 1914, additional parts of the building were erected, which meant that the current institution size was largely achieved. In 1980 the open department in Herrenried was opened. From 1993 to 1994 a detention center was set up. Parts of the prison buildings, such as the gate building, are now a listed building . Because of its former designation as a state prison, the prison is popularly known as Café Landes .

By 2015, the prison Mannheim belonged branch Heidelberg , "1 Upper Lazy fur" colloquially short due to the mailing address Lazy fur called, were imprisoned in the women, with 87 inmates, and 41 employees. The Heidelberg branch was closed in 2015.

Construction projects

There are plans to build a new gate guard, which will be completed in spring 2015. A single, completely new entrance area is being built for 8 million euros to replace the previous two entrances, one for vehicles and one for visitors. With the construction of the new gate guard, the prison management expects increased security. Furthermore, a new building is to be built on the premises of the institution by 2015, which will offer prison places for 30 women.
