Heidelberg prison
The Heidelberg prison (also called Fauler Pelz , after the address Oberer Fauler Pelz 1 ) was a branch of the Mannheim correctional facility . In 2015 it was closed.
It was responsible for the detention penal system of male adult prisoners in the District Court of Heidelberg and female adult prisoners in the regional court districts of Mannheim, Heidelberg and Mosbach and had 87 places of detention in closed prisons and employed 41 staff. Justice Minister Rainer Stickelberger announced in 2012 that the small Heidelberg prison would be closed in 2015 due to the age of the building and the declining number of inmates.
The listed building is located on a hillside in the south of Heidelberg's old town . The then district prison was built in 1847/48 by Ludwig Lendorff from red sandstone. The eastern parallel building was added in 1911. The building is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg , which wants to develop a concept for subsequent use. On September 11, 2016, the day of the open monument , the Heidelberg residents were able to visit the former prison. Towards the end of 2016 the building was temporarily used for a theater project. The prison has been open for guided tours since 2017. Use as a museum is not possible due to the lack of escape routes.
The University of Heidelberg and the Heidelberg Student Union have also expressed interest in using the building .
