history

View from the north

The Heidenheim correctional facility was built from 1964 to 1966 on a plot of around 4,000 m² in Helmut-Bornefeld-Strasse, and was commissioned in February 1967.

The building consisted of a 3-storey cell block with cells for 45 inmates and a 2-storey administration building, which were connected by an arched corridor at ground level. To the east of the cell tract there was a free-time yard . It was surrounded by a concrete wall about 6 meters high, which was provided with a steel sliding gate suitable for the passage of push buses without an upstream vehicle lock. On the western property line there were two access ramps leading to an underground delivery area . The buildings were partially clad with exposed aggregate concrete slabs and facing bricks . All windows of the cell wing were given a grating consisting of 8 horizontally mounted steel struts. Close-meshed perforated sheets were later attached to the windows of the cells to prevent objects from being passed on (so-called pendulum movement ).

Although after 44 years of use the closure of the prison had already been decided and was imminent, in 2010 around 50,000 euros went into improving fire protection . By the end of August 2012, all inmates in prisons were transferred to Ulm , Schwäbisch Hall and Ellwangen and prison operations were closed.

In the summer of 2013, the city of Heidenheim acquired the property from the state of Baden-Württemberg for 1.175 million euros . The detention center was demolished between January and May 2014 at a cost of 119,000 euros. From July 2015, the new was built on the site of the building of Heidenheim City Library , which opened in November 2017th
