The Heidenheim City Library is the public library of the city of Heidenheim an der Brenz in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The Heidenheim City Library was founded after a municipal council resolution passed in April 1910. It was initially housed in the rooms of the weaving school at the train station, the first media came from a "public reading library" that had been privately run until then. By 1943 the collection had grown to around 2000 books. After moving several times within the city, the library was relocated to the Hallamt on Schnaitheimer Straße in 1953. From 1960 to 1968, the stock of books for young people was moved to the Haus der Jugend in the former Heinrich Voelter Villa. In 1961 the first branch was opened in the Heidenheim West School. In 1973 the Voith company library was taken over and operated as a further branch office for three years. Most of its holdings flowed into the East branch, which was inaugurated in 1979 in the works high school . In the same year the central library with around 32,000 books was moved to the first floor of the Elmar-Doch-Haus . Since 1985 it has been possible to borrow sculptures and prints from an affiliated graph library . The West and East branches were closed in 2004 and 2016, and the main branch in September 2017. Since November 2017, the Heidenheim City Library has been operated exclusively in the new library building on Willy-Brandt-Platz.

New library building

After the premises in the Elmar-Doch-Haus had already become too small for the operation of a modern library in the mid-2000s, the municipal council decided in November 2012 to build a new library building . The 4000 m² area of the Heidenheim correctional facility on Helmut-Bornefeld-Strasse, which was closed in the same year, was favored as a possible location because of its central location. In the summer of 2013, the city of Heidenheim acquired the property from the state of Baden-Württemberg for 1.175 million euros .

A realization competition was announced across Europe for the construction of the new building in 2013 . The jury chose the work of a group of applicants led by the Swiss architect Max Dudler from among 67 admitted participants . His design envisaged a narrow and elongated, cubic flat roof building with different roof and ceiling heights and large window areas. The floor plan of the 4- storey reinforced concrete structure , more than 110 m long, tapers in a north-south direction. As a facade it was given a facing made of light beige bricks.

The usable area of the library is 2040 m² and is thus almost twice as large as in the rooms previously used in the Elmar-Doch-Haus. Additional areas are planned for a foyer , various event rooms and a reading café. In addition to the city library, the building also houses the city archive , the district media center of the Heidenheim district and the administration of the city's historical museums.

The municipal council's decision on the construction project was passed in October 2014, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 23, 2015. The topping-out ceremony took place on June 30, 2016, and the new city library was opened on November 10, 2017.

The total cost of the project was estimated at € 18.5 million. In addition to expenses for buildings, equipment and outdoor facilities, this included € 1.8 million in planning costs and € 1.3 million for the purchase of land and the demolition of the penal institution; a further € 600,000 was calculated for the corresponding road construction measures.
