The main institute ( Hintere Höllgasse 1 ) was built in 1861. The branch offices have existed since 1876 (Hechingen), 1905 (Oberndorf) and 1847 (Villingen-Schwenningen). After the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944 , Nina Schenk Countess von Stauffenberg , wife of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg , was briefly imprisoned in Rottweil in July 1944. This is indicated by a plaque on the outer wall of the prison. At the same time Nikolaus Graf von Üxküll-Gyllenband was detained in Rottweil before he was transported on to Berlin.

Responsibilities

Only men are accommodated in Rottweil. Here sentences of up to six months are served. There are also detainees on remand and detainees under civil law. The inmates usually come from the Rottweil district court. In Hechingen and Villingen-Schwenningen, pre-trial detention takes place on male adults who come from the regional court district of Hechingen or the district court districts of Villingen-Schwenningen and Donaueschingen . Oberndorf is a remand prison for young people and adolescents from all of the above-mentioned regional and district courts.

There are volunteer supervisors available. There is addiction counseling. The two major Christian denominations are represented by pastors. Among other things, playgroups and sporting activities are offered. These can be done outdoors and in weight rooms. There is also a library. The prisoners are called to work (about seven hours a day). In Oberndorf, eight prisoners have the opportunity to prepare for the secondary school leaving certificate.

New building plans

There are plans to shut down the four old buildings and to build a new prison in Rottweil. This should be designed for 600 prisoners and will be built by around 2025. The state parliament of Baden-Württemberg was already preoccupied with the new building plans, especially the location issue .

Trivia

The Rottweiler prison is popularly known as “Café Lang” after the last name of a former head. The former mayor of Stuttgart Gerhard Lang, who grew up there as the son of the prison administrator, describes life in and around the prison in his book No Angel in Höllgasse .

In 2012 there was an escape of two detainees who were soon caught.
