The Bruchsal correctional facility (formerly the Bruchsal state penal institution) is a correctional facility (JVA) in Bruchsal , Baden-Württemberg . Colloquially, the institution is also called "Stern zu Bruchsal" or "Café Achteck" (because of the octagonal prison wall).

history

The main building on Schönbornstrasse northeast of the city center was built in 1841–1848 as a “men's prison ” according to plans by the architect and high-ranking Baden construction officer Heinrich Hübsch . The model for the four-wing central building with its crenellated outer walls reminiscent of a fortress was the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia (USA). After opening in 1848, the year of the revolution in Baden , the institution first took in the prisoners of the suppressed uprising.

During the time of National Socialism , the Bruchsal penal institution (together with the Munich-Stadelheim prison and the Stuttgart remand prison ) was intended to be the " central execution site for execution district VIII "; Johann Reichhart acted as the executioner in charge .

To date, the facility has been supplemented by several extensions so that over 600 prisoners can be accommodated on the ten hectare site. With around 320 staff in the various careers of the prison service , it is a medium-sized institution. It is still reserved for male prisoners, mostly those with long prison sentences. It enables around 400 prisoners to work in their own workshops. A branch is located in Kislau Castle, about 10 km away .

Prominent prisoners were the RAF terrorist Christian Klar and the serial killer Heinrich Pommerenke , who was imprisoned there from 1960 to the end of 2006. In 1991, Hans-Georg Neumann was transferred from Tegel JVA to Bruchsal. Since Pommerenke's death in the Hohenasperg correctional hospital in 2008 , Neumann has been the longest incarcerated prisoner in the Federal Republic of Germany.

On August 9, 2014, an inmate from Burkina Faso who was on hunger strike and had been in strict solitary confinement for several months was found dead in his cell. The then head of the Bruchsal prison, senior government director Thomas Müller, was therefore suspended from duty. There was a suspicion in the room that the prison staff let the inmate starve to death “with sight”. The Karlsruhe public prosecutor then initiated investigations against the prison director and the prison doctor for negligent homicide. The prison doctor was finally charged with negligent homicide, but the preliminary proceedings against the prison director were discontinued due to a lack of sufficient suspicion, as was the disciplinary proceedings. Thomas Müller now heads the Karlsruhe JVA .
