Gerhard Hess (Romanist)

Gerhard Hess (born April 13, 1907 in Lörrach ; † June 30, 1983 in Konstanz ) was a German Romance philologist, philologist and science politician.

Life

Hess studied Romance studies in Basel, Heidelberg and Berlin. In 1931 he received his doctorate from Berlin University . As a research assistant he qualified as a professor for Romance philology in 1938.

In the war years 1940/1941 he was a research assistant at the Leibniz Commission of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and taught as a private lecturer . In Heidelberg he represented the chair holder Walter Mönch , who had been assigned to special tasks by the Nazi rulers. After the Second World War, Mönch was banned from the profession and from the house because of his activities. Hess remained at Mönch's post.

In 1946 he became an adjunct professor; In 1948 he was appointed full professor for Romance philology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

In 1950/51, Gerhard Hess was rector of Heidelberg University and also president of the West German rectors' conference . From 1955 to 1964 he was President of the German Research Foundation (DFG) . In his honor, the “ Gerhard Hess Prize of the German Research Foundation” and the “Gerhard Hess Program for Young Scientists” were initiated.

Gerhard Hess moved to the University of Konstanz in 1964 and was chairman of the founding committee of the University of Konstanz and its rector from 1966 to 1972. Important students of his time in Heidelberg were Hans Robert Jauß , Karl-August Ott and Karl-Heinz Bender .

He was a member of numerous scientific institutions, such as the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 1950 .
