Hinrich Seidel

Hinrich Seidel (born November 7, 1931 in Rendsburg ; † February 18, 2020 in Hanover ) was a German chemist . From 1979 to 1997 he was President of the University of Hanover .

Life

In 1951 Seidel began studying chemistry at the University of Kiel , which he graduated with a diploma in chemistry . In 1960 he received his doctorate, his habilitation followed in 1967. From 1969 he worked as a university lecturer. In 1971 he received a chair for inorganic chemistry at the Technical University of Hanover . There he took over the management of the chemistry department in 1972/1973. From 1975 to 1977 he was rector and in 1979 became president of the university, which was renamed Universität Hannover . During his tenure, the Lower Saxony University Act came into force, which provided for extensive changes in the university structure. The number of students increased massively, and the University of Hanover developed into the largest university in Lower Saxony . Seidel was Vice President from 1984 to 1989, then President of the European Rectors 'Conference until 1994 and President of the West German Rectors' Conference (WRK) from 1987 to 1990 . Under his leadership, relations among European universities have improved significantly.
