Otto Heinrich Flachsbart (born February 26, 1898 in Paderborn ; † September 23, 1957 in Hanover ) was a German engineer and professor of mechanics. From 1947 to 1950 rector of the Technical University of Hanover . Flaxbeard is considered a pioneer in the field of wind loads.

Life

Studied with Ludwig Prandtl in Göttingen . Flachsbart later became head of department at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen, which was founded by Prandtl . 1928 doctorate at the TH Hannover on the subject: "History of Goslar Water Management". At the TH Hannover he was initially a private lecturer for hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. In 1932 Flachsbart was appointed professor of mechanics at the TH Hannover. He worked out a physical justification for the wind forces on structures, helped design DIN 1055 Part IV and built a wind tunnel. In November 1933 he signed the professors' declaration of Adolf Hitler at German universities and colleges . In 1937 he was retired in accordance with the political environment according to § 6 BBG because his wife was of "Jewish descent". After he was forced to retire from university, Flachsbart took on a leading research position at Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen at the beginning of 1938. In addition, he also held a leading position in a working committee of the Reich Minister for Armaments and Ammunition.

At its own request, the university's senate decided retrospectively to October 1, 1945 to rehabilitate and revoke retirement . Flachsbart received his professorship for mechanics again and also became dean of the faculty for mechanical engineering and head of the mechanical engineering department. In 1947 he founded the North German Mechanics Colloquium with Hermann Schaefer , professor of mechanics at the TU Braunschweig, at his suggestion. From 1947 to 1950 he was rector of the TH Hannover and in 1950 also chairman of the university rectors' conference . From 1953 he was a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

Flachsbart later also became State Secretary in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture. He remained a professor at the TH Hannover until his death in 1957.

His student Alf Pflüger later also became rector of the university.
