Barkhausen studied from 1866 to 1872 at the former Polytechnic School Hannover Engineering . He completed his legal clerkship at the railroad directorates in Hanover and Saarbrücken . In 1877 he passed the 2nd state examination to become a government architect ( assessor ) and from then on worked for the Berlin Stadt- und Ringbahn . In 1880 he was offered a position at the Technical University of Hanover, where he initially taught statics and steel construction as an assistant teacher and from 1883 as a full professor . In 1883 Barkhausen officiated as secretary of the Architects and Engineers Association in Hanover .

In 1898 he developed the spherical bottom container for water towers named after him . Due to the patented, hemispherical tank bottom and the resulting constant transition between wall and floor, the construction of water tanks could be considerably simplified by the tangential force dissipation. Hundreds of water towers were built according to this new principle, including in Plankstadt and Darmstadt . The tanks were produced by August Klönne , a steel construction engineer friend of mine , with his Dortmund steel construction company Aug. Klönne as the sole manufacturer. An improved, spherical variant was prefabricated from 1906 as the Klönne type until around 1935 in several hundred copies and installed worldwide, a striking special form of which is the Lanstroper egg .

From 1904 to 1907 he was rector of the Technical University of Hanover.

During the First World War he advised the War Ministry on the construction of airship hangars and aircraft hangars .

In 1881 he married Johanna Ilse from Beurig near Saarburg . The couple had four children together.
