Carl Georg Barkhausen

Carl Georg Barkhausen (born February 14, 1848 in Bremen ; † November 5, 1917 in Bremen) was a lawyer and mayor of Bremen.

Life

Barkhausen was the son of a Bremen doctor. He attended high school and studied law in Heidelberg , Berlin , Leipzig and Göttingen . During his studies in Heidelberg Barkhausen became a member of the Frankonia Heidelberg fraternity . In 1870 he obtained his doctorate in Leipzig. jur. Barkhausen became a lawyer in Bremen, and since 1876 also a government lawyer. In 1875 he became a member, later vice-president of the citizenship .

In 1879 Barkhausen was elected to the Bremen Senate . His field of work was ports , shipping and transport , where he was particularly committed to the expansion of the ports in Bremen and Bremerhaven and supported the development of industry on the Lower Weser . As a senator, in 1896, together with his colleague Hermann Gröning and director Schauinsland, he opened the “Municipal Museum for Natural, Ethnic and Commercial Studies”, now the overseas museum .

Barkhausen was mayor from 1903–1907, 1910–1913 and 1916–1917 and, from 1904, President of the Senate for five terms (1904, 1906, 1911, 1913, 1916). From 1911 to 1917 he was president of the Bürgerparkverein .

Barkhausen was buried on December 6, 1917 in the Riensberg cemetery .
