Walter Hensen

Walter Hensen (born August 15, 1901 in Kiel , † September 3, 1973 in Wedel / Schleswig-Holstein ) was a German civil engineer for hydraulic engineering and from 1952 to 1954 rector of the Technical University of Hanover .

Life

Hensen passed his diploma examination at the TH Hannover in 1931. From 1932 to 1934 he was government construction manager at the water engineering authority in Kiel and at the waterway authority in Hamburg , before he worked as a test engineer at the Prussian research institute for hydraulic engineering , earthworks and shipbuilding in Berlin until 1935 . From 1935 to 1949 he worked in the Reich and Federal Waterways Administration as a government building officer; in 1940 he received his doctorate at the Technical University of Berlin on the development of fairway conditions in the Outer Elbe . In 1947 he was promoted to senior government building officer, and in 1949 to ministerial councilor. In 1949 he received a call from the Technical University of Hanover to the chair for hydraulic engineering and for the management of the Hanoverian research institute for foundation engineering and hydraulic engineering Franzius Institute . In 1957 Walter Hensen was commissioned from India to prepare an expert opinion on the silting problems of the port access in Calcutta , which can be traced back to the Farakka dam in West Bengal . Following the severe storm surge in 1962 , the State of Hamburg set up an expert commission under Hensen's leadership to develop recommendations for future flood protection. In 1971 Hensen retired .
