Life

Mathematical foundation of economics , 1885

Wilhelm Launhardt attended secondary school after high school and from 1848 the polytechnic school in Hanover. Here he was a member of the PGV (Polytechnischer-Gesangs-Verein). He completed his civil engineering training in 1859 with the second state examination.

Between 1854 and 1869 he was employed in the state building administration of the Kingdom of Hanover . He then worked on the construction of the Venlo-Hamburg railway.

Also in 1869 Launhardt became a teacher for road, rail and bridge construction at the Hanover Polytechnic. In 1871 he received the title of professor. Launhardt turned down various appointments to other universities.

In 1872 the Goethe Bridge was built according to his design .

From 1875 he was director of the Polytechnic and between 1880 and June 30, 1886 first rector of the Technical University of Hanover .

Beyond his narrower department, Launhardt is considered to be the founder of technical and economic transport science. His work dealt with practical problems as well as with mathematical economic questions.

Launhardt introduced mathematical models into economics. In 1885 he succeeded in calculating an optimal tariff rate in terms of the terms of trade effect .

In his work, Mathematical Justification of Economics , he developed the funnel model . He showed that the size of the sales area is a function of the ex-works price and the amount of the freight rate. Furthermore: the market and competition are imperfect because of the preference resulting from the geographical distance between supplier and customer.

From 1880 Launhardt was an extraordinary member of the Academy of Building in Berlin. As a representative of the TU Hannover, he was a member of the Prussian manor house from 1898 . He received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden .

At the economics faculty of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover , graduates with outstanding results are awarded the Wilhelm Launhardt Prize.
