Ehlert Robert Friedrich Otzen (born May 9, 1872 in Giesensdorf , † October 3, 1934 in Hanover ) was a German civil engineer and is considered the inventor of the word " Autobahn ".

Life

Robert Otzen was born the son of the Berlin architect Johannes Otzen (1839–1911) and his wife Caroline b. Househusband and had four sisters. Otzen studied engineering , became a government builder in 1900 and railway construction and operations inspector in 1905. From 1905 to 1907 he was an assistant for civil engineering at the TH Hannover . From 1907 Otzen was a private lecturer for the structural organization of buildings from civil engineering and their theoretical justification, before he became professor for iron construction and statics in 1908. From 1913 to 1915 he held the post of rector of the university before serving in the army until 1918. From November 19, 1926 he was chairman of the HaFraBa motorway project ( Hamburg - Frankfurt am Main - Basel ). As part of this project, he was responsible for the technical planning of the Hamburg – Göttingen section. In 1931 Otzen became president of the state material examination office in Berlin-Dahlem .

In 1929 he is said to have coined the term “ motorway ” based on the word “ railway ” . Up to this point in time people mostly spoke of “just a car road”.
