Karl-Heinz Bender

Karl-Heinz Bender (born October 8, 1936 in Speyer ; † March 4, 2017 in Schweich ) was a Romance scholar who taught Romance literature at the University of Trier from 1971 to 2005 . The Franco-German relations were a focus of his teaching and research activities.

College career

After studying Romance Philology and History at the Universities of Heidelberg and Paris , he with the Promotion (for Gerhard Hess ) and the state exam completed for teachers at high schools, he first led his professional career as an assistant to Hans Robert Jauss to the Universities of Münster , Giessen and Constance . After his habilitation in Konstanz, Bender was appointed to the University of Trier in 1971, where he actively participated in the development of the subject group Romance Studies . In 1980 he was offered a position at the University of Lausanne , which he declined in favor of staying in Trier. 1981 to 1983 he was Dean of Faculty II Linguistics and Literature .

In 2005, Bender retired at the end of the summer semester .

Professional activity

Bender's focus on teaching and research - the Romance heroic epic , Franco-German relations and the network of relationships between literature and power - resulted in numerous works and publications as well as two large research projects:

  • The French crusade epic with a first international colloquium on the French crusade epic in 1984, which brought many domestic and foreign researchers to the then young University of Trier.
  • The three-volume edition of the memoirs of Johann Christian von Mannlich , the court painter and building director at the Zweibrücker Hof and later central gallery director in Munich.

Awards

  • May 5, 2003: Commander of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (highest rank of the Order), awarded at a ceremony by the Council of Europe .
  • Honorary member of the Observatoire des relations franco-allemandes pour la construction européenne . This institution was founded on the occasion of the 40th annual contract of the Elysée Treaty . Other honorary members are z. B. Joseph Rovan and Jacques Kosciusko-Morizet .
