history

Roman finds on the eastern edge of Schweich and on the Heidekopf , about four kilometers from Schweich, prove a settlement at that time. Franconian graves were found in the western part of the village, on the road to Issel.

Schweich was first mentioned in a document in 721 as a Soiacum : the Franconian noblewoman Bertrada and her son Charibert donated a farm on the Moselle to the newly founded Prüm Monastery . In 762 the whole place became the property of the monastery.

The Niederprümer Hof was built on the remains of a Roman villa and served as the administrative seat of the Prüm monastery. A cultural center is now housed in the restored building from 1706.

In medieval times there was the Quintburg on the castle hill above the Kaiserhammerweiher and not far away in the Kastelaun district there was a hill fort .

At the landmark of the city, the ferry tower at the marina, one of the most important ferry crossings on the Moselle was the Trier - Koblenz road. To the north of the city is the Schweich train station , which was built in 1878 with the connection to the Trier - Wittlich railway line .

In the Electorate of Trier , Schweich belonged to the Pfalzel office with the seat of a mayor's shop . In French times , Schweich became the seat of a Mairie and the seat of the canton of Schweich with the other Mairies Longuich, Hetzerath, Mehring, Sehlem and Trittenheim. The Verbandsgemeinde Schweich was formed in 1968 from the Prussian mayor's office in Schweich and the later office of Schweich.

On June 7, 1969, the previously independent community of Issel was incorporated into Schweich. The city charter was granted on May 30, 1984.
