Waldweiler is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Saarburg-Kell association.
Geographical location
Waldweiler is located on the Black Forest high forest and in the Saar-Hunsrück nature park . It is located at the northwest foot of the Teufelskopf ( 695 m above sea level ) and on the upper reaches of the Burkelsbach near the source .
Waldweiler also includes the residential areas Haus Bilstein and Mühlscheid as well as a few houses in the hamlet of Niederkell , which is otherwise within the boundaries of the Mandern community .
history
The prehistory of life around the devil's head goes back to the time of the Celts who mined iron ore in this area . The first evidence of settlement of the current location of Waldweiler comes from Roman times , from which seven Roman settlements have been localized so far.
Until the end of the 18th century the place belonged to the imperial direct rule of Schillingen of the Trier cathedral chapter . In 1794 the Left Bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops. From 1798 to 1814 Waldweiler belonged to the canton Hermeskeil in the Saar department . Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region came under the Kingdom of Prussia . The community was assigned to the mayor's office of Kell in the district of Trier , established in 1816, and belonged to the Rhine province from 1822 until the end of World War II . Waldweiler has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .

The local council in Waldweiler consists of twelve council members, who were elected in a personalized proportional representation in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Attractions
The church of St. Willibrord was built from 1969 to 1973 according to plans by the architect Heinz Bienefeld as a brick building on a polygonal floor plan. The Gothic choir of the previous church was integrated into the new building. In 1977 the church was awarded the prize for exemplary building in Rhineland-Palatinate.
